J.D. Power and Associates Reports:
Syosset Hospital Recognized for a Fourth Consecutive Year
For Providing an Outstanding Inpatient Experience

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.: 19 June 2008 —Syosset Hospital in Syosset, N.Y., has been recognized for service excellence under the J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital Program.SM This distinction acknowledges Syosset Hospital for its strong commitment to provide “An Outstanding Inpatient Experience” for a fourth consecutive year and “An Outstanding Emergency Department Experience” for a second consecutive year.

The service excellence distinction was determined by surveying recently discharged Syosset Hospital patients on their perceptions of their hospital stay or emergency room visit and comparing the results to the national benchmark established in the annual J.D. Power and Associates National Hospital Service Performance Study.SM

The telephone-based research conducted among Syosset Hospital patients focuses on the five key drivers of patient satisfaction with their overall hospital experience. These drivers, which were identified in the national study, are: dignity and respect; speed and efficiency; comfort; information and communication; and emotional support.

“Syosset Hospital has been recognized with this elite distinction for providing its patients with a consistently positive experience,” said David Stefan, executive director of the healthcare division of J.D. Power and Associates. “Achieving recognition in both inpatient and emergency department experiences shows a strong commitment to service excellence in all aspects of patient care.”

With regard to the inpatient experience, Syosset Hospital—a member of the North Shore-LIJ Health System—performs well in speed and efficiency, particularly in the performance of their nurses, and in the coordination of care between their doctors and nurses. The hospital also receives high ratings in information and communication, specifically in relation to follow-up care and the ability of doctors and nurses to explain conditions and treatments.

The emergency department of Syosset Hospital receives high ratings in the speed and efficiency of the staff in delivering care to their patients. In particular, the hospital performs well in the performance of its nurses and in short wait times after arriving to the emergency room.

“Our mission is to provide the highest quality patient experience possible to each and every person who walks through our doors,” said Michael Fener, executive director at Syosset Hospital. “We are extremely proud of this recognition from a premiere quality measurement organization like J.D. Power and Associates because it lets both our staff and community know that we are fulfilling that mission at a very high level.”

Non-government, acute-care hospitals throughout the nation are eligible for the J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital recognition for inpatient, emergency department, outpatient, and maternity services. Distinction is valid for one year, after which the hospital may reapply for this recognition.
