Introduction
Hyundai chose the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show to reveal their Concept Genesis Coupe. Seven years in the making, the car features a look inspired by LeMans race cars, drifters, and Jada Toys Dub City die-cast vehicles. Hyundai describes the low, sleek front and rear stance of the concept as "sinister." The demonstration vehicle was painted a brash Sonic Orange, offset by a carbon fiber hood, roof, and ground effects. The production version of the Genesis Coupe may arrive in showrooms in just over a year.

The production Genesis Coupe will target Mitsubishi Eclipse, Honda Civic Si, Volkswagen GTI, Mazda RX-8, and Scion tC shoppers. It is not seen as a replacement for the front-wheel-drive Tiburon. With RWD and available high-performance hardware, it is a natural for the drift market. According to Hyundai, "the mission for the Concept Genesis Coupe was to create a pure performance car with a design that would capture the imagination of the hardcore automotive enthusiast."

The 2+2 coupe that debuted at Los Angeles is expected to be followed by a sedan. The powerful upmarket RWD sedan is expected to be seated as Hyundai's flagship-taking the space formerly occupied by the Azera.

Hardware
The Hyundai Genesis is expected to reach showrooms with a 3.8-liter 6-cylinder engine that will produce about 300 hp. An optional turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is also in the works. Both engines will be offered with a choice of 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. The RWD models will feature independent suspension with MacPherson front struts. Brembo disc brakes and a limited-slip differential will also be offered. While the concept wears 20-inch wheels, the production versions are expected to be fitted with performance-oriented summer tires wrapped around standard 18-inch or optional 19-inch wheels. Smaller and lighter than most in its segment, the Hyundai concept is expected to sprint to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds.

Hyundai says the production coupe will debut at the New York Auto show in early 2008. Dealerships will see the Genesis in spring 2009 as a 2010 model.
