History
Lexus is the premium brand of Toyota Motor Corporation. It was launched in North America in 1989 with the introduction of its first model, a full-size 8-cylinder luxury sedan called the LS 400. Lexus was on a quest to challenge premier luxury brands, such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW, with its all-new, rear-wheel-drive, 8-cylinder, full-size luxury sedan.
While the luxury automaker only sold two models in its early years (a second model, the 6-cylinder ES 250, debuted at the same time as the LS 400 but at a lower price point), the Japanese automaker added a coupe (SC 400) in 1992 and a midsize sport sedan (GS 300) in 1993. By 1996, Lexus had added a full-size SUV (LX 450) to the lineup. Leading its charge with a focus on customer service, Lexus built its brand over the next decade. Its model range would eventually grow to encompass a full range of models, competing in nearly every premium segment.Today, Lexus manufactures a variety of passenger automobiles and sport utility vehicles. These include coupes, convertibles, sedans, and SUVs with up-to-7-passenger seating capacities. Models include those with front, rear, and all-wheel drive with gasoline and hybrid powertrains. Lexus vehicles are manufactured in Japan and North America and sold around the world.
