2011 Toyota ModelsHistory
Toyota Motor Corporation was founded in Japan in the late 1930s. The company traces its earliest roots to 1937, when Kiichiro Toyoda launched a new automotive division of Toyota Industries called Toyota Motor Corporation. Its first passenger car was called the Toyota "AA." Initially, the company's passenger car sales were rather slow. As a result, the nascent automaker focused its efforts on the production of commercial vehicles, namely trucks and buses.

Things started to change in 1945, when post-war Japan called on Toyota to change its direction and ramp-up production of passenger cars. A decade later, the company was producing nearly 8,400 automobiles per year. Even as sales were on the rise, Toyota didn't expand immediately. It wasn't until 1957 that the company opened its North American headquarters. It took the company several more years, and the introduction of the Toyota Corona in 1964, for sales to catch on in the U.S. market.

In 1989, Toyota launched a completely new luxury brand, called Lexus, to capitalize on its earned success. One decade later, the company launched Scion, to attract a younger audience to its model range. Toyota is now one of the world's largest automakers.

Today, Toyota manufactures a variety of passenger automobiles and sport utility vehicles. These include coupes, convertibles, sedans and SUVs with up-to-8-passenger seating capacities. Models include those with front-, rear-, and all-wheel drive with gasoline and hybrid powertrains. Toyota vehicles are manufactured in Japan and North America and sold around the world.
