History
Cadillac is the luxury marque of General Motors, an American automaker based in Michigan. The company was founded in 1902, more than a century ago, making it one of the world's oldest brands still making automobiles. Cadillac was originally launched by a mechanic (Henry Leland) who sold the company to General Motors in 1909.
The new automaker soon established Cadillac as a premier luxury brand and builder of fine coaches. In addition to its historical significance, Cadillac pioneered some of the industry's first full electrical systems, steel roofs (replacing canvas or wood), and it is credited with engineering many transmission improvements. They were also a noted engine builder; in 1930, the company introduced the first V-16 powerplant. Its V-8, V-12 and V-16 engines solidified the company's reputation on a global basis.
After the Second World War, American-built Cadillac models were noted for their distinctive styling, with plenty of bright chrome and tailfins on some models. During the 1950s, the automaker had some of its best-selling years.
Today, Cadillac manufactures a range of passenger automobiles and sport utility vehicles. These include coupes, 4-door sedans, wagons, and SUVs with up-to-8-passenger seating capacities. Models include those with front, rear, and all-wheel drive. Cadillac vehicles are manufactured in North America and sold around the world.
