2011 Mitsubishi ModelsHistory
Mitsubishi Motors is a Japanese automaker that was founded in 1970 after breaking off from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. While Mitsubishi Motors has been in business for 40 years, the parent company has been manufacturing automobiles since 1917. In its early years, the company built cars (it assembled Japan's first all-wheel-drive vehicle in 1937), aircraft, trains, and ships, but it began to increase its focus on vehicle production after the end of the Second World War.

In the 1970s, Chrysler purchased a 15 percent share in the company. Shortly thereafter, the American automaker began importing Mitsubishi Galant models rebadged as Dodge Colts. In 1982, the Mitsubishi brand was finally introduced to the North American market (the lineup included the Tredia, Cordia and Starion), with all sales credited to Chrysler for government trade agreements. The relationship with Chrysler ended in 1991, when the automaker sold its equity stake (though the companies continue to work closely together).

Today, Mitsubishi manufactures a range of passenger automobiles and sport utility vehicles. These include coupes, 4-door sedans, convertibles, and SUVs with up-to-5-passenger seating capacities. Models include both front- and all-wheel drive. Mitsubishi vehicles are manufactured in Japan, Netherlands, Philippines, Thailand, and the United States and sold around the world.
