Introduction
The 5-door Audi A3 hatchback offers European engineering in a compact package with room for five people. Available in the European market since 1996, the A3 didn't arrive in North America until 2005 (2006 model year), when the second-generation version arrived on our shores. Loaded with trickle-down amenities from its big brothers, the Audi A4 and Audi A6, as well as technology and refinement levels more often reserved for models costing much more, the Audi A3 represents a competitive package in a fresh segment occupied by the BMW 1 Series, Mini Cooper S, Volkswagen GTI, and Volvo C30. Until now, the Audi A3 has been offered for sale in North America only with gasoline engines. In 2010, Audi introduces the A3 TDI, equipped with a fuel-efficient 2.0-liter clean-diesel engine. It is expected in showrooms during the first quarter of 2010.
