2014 Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series Infused with Power and Performance
Mercedes says the new SLS AMG Black Series was inspired by the SLS AMG GT3 racecar, and that the new Black Series model reflects "100-percent transfer of technology and engineering from motorsport to road." To that end, the SLS AMG Black Series offers more power, upgraded components, lighter weight, and exterior modifications that are as much about adding downforce as they are distancing the Black Series from lesser SLS AMG models.
Under the carbon fiber-reinforced plastic hood, the SLS AMG Black Series is equipped with a 6.3-liter V-8 engine boasting added horsepower and torque and a higher 8,000-rpm redline. Horsepower measures 622 at 7,400 rpm, and torque measures 468 lb.-ft. at 5,500 rpm.
A 7-speed AMG SpeedShift dual clutch automated manual gearbox supplies Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, and Manual shifting programs, downshift rev matching, and, according to Mercedes, faster shift response than a standard SLS AMG. A new electronic locking rear differential is standard, as well as a Race Start launch control system partly responsible for a zero-to-60 mph acceleration time of 3.5 seconds, according to Mercedes.
The SLS AMG Black Series is also equipped with a performance-tuned AMG Adaptive Sport Suspension, titanium AMG sport exhaust system, ceramic AMG performance braking system, and a three-stage stability control system.
Exterior modifications include tinted headlights, black taillight surrounds, flared fenders, and a body kit constructed of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic. An optional AMG Aerodynamics package adds an adjustable carbon fiber rear spoiler and modifications to the front skirt design to add greater downforce and high-speed stability--appropriate for a vehicle capable of achieving a 196-mph maximum velocity.
The new SLS AMG Black Series rides on lightweight, staggered-width AMG forged aluminum wheels, sized 19 inches in diameter up front and 20 inches in diameter in back. The wheels are painted matte black, and shod with performance tires.
Inside, the 2014 SLS AMG Black Series offers AMG sport seats trimmed in leather and Alcantara, an Alcantara-wrapped AMG sports steering wheel, and a combination of red, gloss black, and carbon fiber accents. Purists can delete the standard COMAND infotainment system to save an extra 13 pounds of vehicle weight. Alternatively, the car can be upgraded with a 1,000-watt Bang & Olufsen BeoSound premium audio system. Mercedes also offers the SLS AMG Black Series with extra carbon fiber trim for the cabin, engine cover, and the exterior mirrors.
Mercedes says the SLS AMG Black Series will go on sale in the United States during the summer of 2013.
