Recall Roundup: Malfunctioning Remote Engine Start Fobs Impact Subaru Models

Subaru is recalling 47,419 vehicles equipped with a remote engine start fob that might randomly transmit engine start requests without the vehicle owner pressing the remote engine start button. If this occurs, the vehicle's engine may start and run for 15 minutes, followed by re-starts until the remote engine start fob's battery is depleted or the vehicle runs out of fuel. If the vehicle is located in an enclosed space, such as a garage, this may cause a dangerous build-up of carbon monoxide, leading to headache, dizziness, or, in extreme cases, unconsciousness, and asphyxiation.

The source of the problem is an Audiovox remote engine start accessory item that, if dropped, may become damaged. The models covered by this recall include the following:

2012-2013 Subaru Impreza
2010-2012 Subaru Legacy
2010-2012 Subaru Outback
2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek

Subaru will replace the accessory remote engine start fobs free of charge beginning at the end of April. Standard original equipment key fobs are not affected by this recall. Concerned owners can contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783 and reference Subaru recall campaign number WQF-42 or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Campaign ID number 13V061000.
