Jeep Recalls Nearly 750,000 Grand Cherokee and Liberty Models for Air Bag Issue
The problem stems from a failure of the air bag control module that triggers the front air bags, side curtain air bags, and/or front seat belt pre-tensioners during normal vehicle operation. As a result, the air bags could injure occupants, and the unexpected deployment of the safety systems could result in a crash.
The affected Jeep Liberty models were built between January 9, 2001, and March 23, 2003. The affected Jeep Grand Cherokee models were built between February 13, 2001, and May 23, 2003.
To resolve the issue, Jeep dealers will install a supplemental jumper harness to the air bag module. The repair will be free of charge, and the recall is expected to begin in January 2013.
Grand Cherokee and Liberty owners can contact Chrysler directly with questions by calling 1-800-247-9753. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) campaign ID number for this recall is 12V527000, and Chrysler's recall campaign number is M35.
