BMW X5 Diesel Recall Addresses Potential Loss of Power Steering

BMW is recalling 29,800 units of the 2009-2012 BMW X5 xDrive35d equipped with a turbo-diesel 6-cylinder engine. In these vehicles, the engine belt idler pulley bolt can loosen and break over time, causing the X5 to unexpectedly lose power-assisted steering and, as a result, potentially increase the risk of a crash.

The affected vehicles were built between September 1, 2008, and November 15, 2012. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Campaign ID number for this recall is 12V550000, and owners can contact BMW with questions at 1-800-525-7417. The recall is expected to begin in January of 2013.
