Honda Announces Recall of Small Number of Civics for Steering Column Problem

Honda has initiated a recall of 157 Honda Civics due to problems with the steering column. The recall affects only a handful of the 2012 Civics that were built between October 26 and October 30, 2012. According to a notice that Honda sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), those few vehicles were assembled using a tilt bracket that had been designed for use with 2013 model cars, not 2012. Therefore, Honda says, the automaker "cannot assure proper performance of the energy absorbing characteristics of the steering column in a crash if the correct components have not been installed." However, so far no accidents or injuries have been reported as a result of this mistake.

"The steering column may not have proper energy-absorbing characteristics, which could increase the risk of injury during a vehicle crash," explains NHTSA.

Honda advises owners of these cars to return to the dealer to have their vehicle inspected; if necessary, the tilt brackets will be replaced with the correct component at no charge.
