Subaru Puddle Lamp Recall Addresses Potential Fire Risk

Subaru has recalled 633,842 vehicles equipped with accessory puddle lights designed to illuminate the ground on the outside of the doors to make it easier to see when entering or exiting the vehicle. According to the recall, if an electrolytic moisture source, such as road spray that has road salt in it or sea spray, penetrates the puddle light or its connector, a short circuit could result, which may generate enough heat to start a fire.

The models impacted by this recall include the 2009-2012 Subaru Forester, the 2010 and 2011 Subaru Legacy, the 2010 and 2011 Subaru Outback, and the 2006-2012 Subaru Tribeca. To resolve the problem, Subaru dealers will install an additional fused electrical harness at no cost to the owner.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall campaign will begin in February of 2013. Concerned vehicle owners can contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. Be sure to reference Subaru recall campaign number WQE-41, or NHTSA Campaign ID Number 12V602000.
