Preparing for Your Hospital Stay

No one particularly looks forward to a hospital stay. But if you know ahead of time that one will be necessary, you can cut down on stress and confusion by preparing for it advance. Much of your preparation will depend on why you're going into the hospital, the length of your stay, what your insurance will cover, and other factors. But here are the basics.

Information You'll Need:
  • Social Security number
  • Insurance card, including insurer's contact information and your policy number
  • Medicare/Medicaid cards
  • Living will
  • Government-issued photo ID
  • Credit card or checks to pay for anything not covered by insurance
  • Contact information for your next of kin, other family, and employer
  • Name and contact information of the referring doctor

What to Pack:
  • Clean clothes for your discharge
  • Toiletries
  • Bathrobe and slippers
  • List of all your medications
  • Cash for small purchases
  • Cell phone and other personal electronics, if allowed
  • Eyeglasses, prosthetics, dentures, hearing aid
  • Reading and writing materials
  • Snuff, if you use tobacco (most hospitals are entirely smoke-free)
  • Phone numbers and e-mail addresses of anyone you might want to contact during your stay

What to Arrange in Advance:
  • Private room (ordinarily not covered by insurance)
  • Special meals, such as kosher, halal or vegetarian
  • Places and times where you can use your cell phone and computer
  • Schedule of visits from family members and friends, if you want lots of company
  • List of friends and family who will be allowed private information about your stay and condition
  • Care for your pets

Arrival:
  • Bring a friend or relative who can help you get settled
  • Wear loose, comfortable, casual clothing. Leave jewelry and other valuables at home
