Tips for Renting a Car

Here are some time and money-saving tips when renting a car:

If you're looking to save money, request a subcompact car. They'll be the least expensive option and if you've reserved a subcompact and none is available, the company will have to usually upgrade you to a larger car at the subcompact rate.

If you're already an insured motorist, your own insurance policy will usually apply to rental cars as well. If you don't own a car, you might have to opt for the insurance but also check whether your credit card provides car rental coverage.

Rent the car full of fuel and bring it back full. If the car's gas tank isn't full when you return it, the rental company will charge you for the fill often at a very high price.

Compare town vs. airport. In some markets, you'll save by taking a bus from the airport to your hotel, and renting your car there.

Use the Internet to compare prices. Usually, the largest rental companies will be more expensive, but they'll often provide better service. Discount renters might offer no frills, and their cars might be located some distance from the airport. Also, look for weekend or weekly rates.

Look for club memberships. Many rental companies offer club discounts on various services, but a membership is typically worth the money only to frequent renters. Beware of hidden fees, such as an "airport surcharge."

Always call or e-mail to confirm your rental on the day you travel. Call again if you're running late. Try to reserve your car a week or so in advance, especially if you want a specialized vehicle like a van, sports car, or an expensive luxury car.
