Overview

The XC90 is Volvo's midsize crossover SUV. Introduced in 2003, it was one of the pioneers of the car-based crossover market. It provides many luxury features as standard equipment, and offers several detailed option packages. New for 2010 is a standard third-row seat, bringing seating capacity up to 7.

The 2010 Volvo XC90 comes in two trims featuring an inline 6-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive (with all-wheel drive (AWD) optional), and one that features a V-8 engine with standard AWD. The entry-level XC90 3.2 includes 18-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, tri-zone automatic climate control, sunroof, and a full range of power accessories (including power front seats), plus an 8-speaker sound system. The XC90 3.2 R-Design trim steps up to 19-inch wheels, sport suspension and steering, upgraded upholstery, and special exterior ornamentation. The XC90 V8 adds the more powerful engine and standard AWD; it provides 18-inch wheels with 19-inch wheels optional. The Climate option package addresses cold-weather issues; the Multimedia package includes a navigation system, upgraded sound system, and satellite radio. The V8 trim qualifies for the Executive option package, which provides a long list of other upgrades.

Standard on the 2010 Volvo XC90 3.2 and 3.2 R-Design is a 235-horsepower, 3.2-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine that delivers 15 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The XC90 V8 features a 311-horsepower, 4.4-liter V-8 engine that produces 325 lb.-ft. of torque and delivers 13 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. All 2010 Volvo XC90s employ a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control.

Standard safety features on the 2010 Volvo XC90 include anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, stability control, rear park assist, front side air bags, and side curtain air bags. A blind-spot warning system is optional. In government crash tests, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the XC90 5 (out of 5) stars on all front- and side-impact tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the XC90 the highest-possible \"Good\" ratings across the board on all impact tests.

Starting MSRPs for the 2010 Volvo XC90 ranged from $37,700 to $47,500.
