Introduction
The 2014 Volvo S60 is a sleek 5-passenger sedan available in front-wheel-drive (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) versions, along with nine trim levels and a choice of 5- and 6-cylinder engines. Competitors include the Acura TSX, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Buick Regal, Cadillac ATS, Infiniti Q50, Lexus IS, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Models and Features
Volvo starts off its 2014 S60 sedan lineup with the FWD T5, arriving on dealers' lots backed by a 30,000-mile free factory-scheduled maintenance plan, as well as heated power-adjustable turn signal mirrors, dual-zone climate control, 8-speaker sound and infotainment system with a 7-in. display screen, Bluetooth connectivity, 17-in. alloy wheels, and a power driver's seat with 8-way adjustment. Adding to that list of amenities is the S60 T5 Premier, which is where buyers will find a standard power tilt/slide moonroof, reconfigurable instrumentation, auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather upholstery, and a power passenger's seat with 8-way adjustment. The T5 Premium Plus version of the 2014 S60 ratchets up the content meter a bit more courtesy of features such as a rearview camera, while the fanciest T5, known as the Platinum, goes for broke with its power-folding mirrors, navigation with voice command, and 650-watt premium surround-sound system.

Next up is the T6 AWD, featuring not only standard AWD, but also a larger engine, paddle shifters, sport seats, recalibrated suspension, 18-in. alloy wheels, and a list of upgrades shared with the T5 Premier. T6 AWD Premier Plus and T6 AWD Platinum models follow this same formula.

At the top of the S60 hierarchy are the T6 AWD R-Design (similar to the Premier Plus from an equipment perspective) and T6 AWD R-Design Platinum trim levels. These sedans reflect a heightened focus on performance, as evidenced by a more aggressively tuned chassis, unique foot pedals, special body kit and accent trim, and other enhancements like HID headlights.

Options and Packages
Depending on which trim level is selected, the 2014 Volvo S60 can be upgraded with a host of safety systems, heated windshield and washer nozzles, rear-seat entertainment system, heated front and rear seats, and more.

Under the Hood
S60 models bearing the T5 designation are fitted with a turbocharged, 2.5-liter, inline 5-cylinder engine that produces 250 horsepower and 266 lb.-ft. of torque, output that's channeled to the front or all four wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission featuring a sport mode.

T6 variants are delivered with standard AWD and a turbocharged, 3.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine that generates 300 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque. The S60 R-Design uses this same power plant, though it boasts 325 horsepower backed up by 354 lb.-ft. of torque. The same 6-speed gearbox is used.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the most efficient of all 2014 Volvo S60s are FWD models drawing power from the 5-cylinder engine, which is good for ratings of 21 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg combined. Opting for AWD chops a single mpg from each of those figures.

With its extra muscle, the 3.0-liter 6-cylinder proves to be a bit thirstier when it comes to fuel, consuming a gallon of regular-grade gasoline every 18 miles when traveling in the city, 25 miles out on the freeway, or 21 miles when mixing the two.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Volvo S60 received an overall rating of 5 (out of 5) stars. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 S60 received a \"Good\" rating--the Institute's highest--in all categories; the S60 also received a \"Top Safety Pick+\" designation from the Institute.

Volvo has equipped the 2014 S60 with 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, 6 air bags, front active head restraints, and, on specific trim levels, a rearview camera. Safety-related options include forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, active high-beam headlights, rain-sensing wipers, front and rear park-assist sensors, cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring and road-sign information systems, and intelligent cruise control.
