What Changed for 2009:
  • Versions 1.0 and 2.0 now called T5 and R-Design
  • Standard seat belt reminder
  • New available Preferred package
  • R-Design sport-oriented trim and interior features
  • 17-inch Serapis alloy wheels are a no-cost option
  • Smallest model in the automaker's lineup
  • Comfortable, flexible interior
Volatile gas prices have necessitated a move toward smaller, more fuel-efficient models. Volvo is serving the consumer's need with the C30, the smallest car in its model range. As with any Volvo, the automaker claims the C30 delivers an exceptionally high safety level. And, because Volvo is a premium brand, it has created an ordering process called Custom Build which allows the buyer to choose from a range of options, accessories, exterior colors and interior combinations. A one-time charge of $300 lets buyers tailor a C30 with more than 30 individual options.

Model Lineup
There are two trim levels for the 2009 Volvo C30: T5 and R-Design. Both feature a black egg-crate grille with color-keyed bumpers and bodyside moldings. The R-Design models are dressed up with color-coordinated accent body trim, a rear roof spoiler, unique 5-spoke aluminum wheels, and special badges.

Inside, the C30 T5 features a standard leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob; manual climate control operation; pollen filter; outside temperature gauge; power glass hatch release; tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls; and four cloth bucket seats. The C30 R-Design gets bolder upholstery, a sport steering wheel and pedals, and a high-performance audio system.

Several optional features are available on the C30 without paying the $300 Custom Build fee, including a power moonroof, power-adjustable driver's seat, satellite radio, and metallic paint.

The single engine choice for the 2009 Volvo C30 is a turbocharged inline 5-cylinder that produces 227 hp and 236 lb.-ft. of torque. This is matched to a 6-speed manual transmission, with a 5-speed Geartronic automatic with AutoStick clutchless shifting as an option. The suspension is a 4-wheel independent setup with stabilizer bars front and rear for body roll control, and a sport-tuned suspension is on the Custom Build list for those who want maximum handling capability.

Besides the patented front structure that's designed to provide optimum protection in a frontal impact, the 2009 Volvo C30 uses different grades of steel in the rear for added protection in a rear-end collision. Standard safety items include ABS with brake assist, Dynamic Stability Traction Control, side curtain air bags, Volvo's whiplash protection system, side-impact air bags for front-row occupants, and Daytime Running Lights.

The Volvo C30 features a premium sound system that includes a 650-watt amplifier; Dolby Pro-Logic II surround sound with digital sound processor; anti-theft LED; 10 Dynaudio speakers; an auxiliary input jack; and an in-dash single CD player with MP3 playback capability. Volvo also offers an optional DVD-based navigation system featuring a flip screen plus remote control operation. Finally, rain-sensor windshield washers can detect moisture on the windshield, and will vary the speed of the wipers according to the speed of the vehicle as well as the amount of moisture on the windshield. The rain sensor is part of the optional Climate package that also includes heated front seats and headlamp washers.
