What Changed for 2008:
  • The C30 is an all-new model for Volvo

  • Turbocharged inline 5-cylinder engine

  • Volvo first-ever Custom Build ordering process

  • Standard Volvo Dynamic Stability Traction Control

  • Optional DVD-based navigation system

  • Smallest model in the Volvo lineup

  • Comfortable, flexible interior

  • Optional Blind Spot Information System

  • Optional 5-speed Geartronic automatic transmission with Auto Stick
Rising gas prices have necessitated manufacturers' move toward smaller, more fuel-efficient models. Volvo has done just that with the introduction of the C30, the smallest car in Volvo's model range. The production C30 closely resembles the C30 concept vehicle that made the auto show rounds not long ago. As with any Volvo, the makers claim an exceptionally high safety level. A new ordering process, called Custom Build, allows the buyer to choose from a range of options, accessories, exterior colors and interior combinations. A one-time charge of $300 will let buyers customize their C30 with more than 30 individual options.

Model Lineup
There are two trim levels on the new Volvo C30: Version 1.0 and Version 2.0. Both feature a black egg-crate grille with color-keyed bumpers and bodyside moldings. Inside, both C30 versions feature a standard leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob; manual climate control operation; pollen filter; outside temperature gauge; power glass hatch release; tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls; and four cloth bucket seats.

Items that can be ordered though the Custom Build process include high-intensity discharge headlamps; the Blind Spot Information System that illuminates a light inside on the A-pillar if there is an object in the driver's blind spot; power heated rearview mirrors; run-flat tires; cruise control; keyless drive system; sport steering wheel and gearshift knob; leather seats; and front fog lamps.

Buyers can select some optional features without paying the $300 Custom Build fee: these include a power moonroof; power adjustable driver's seat; satellite radio; and metallic paint.

One engine choice powers the 2008 Volvo C30: a turbocharged inline 5-cylinder that produces 227 hp and 236 lb.-ft. of torque. This is matched to a 6-speed manual transmission, with the 5-speed automatic Geartronic with Auto Stick clutchless shifting as an option. The suspension is a 4-wheel independent setup with stabilizer bars front and rear for body roll control. A dynamic sport suspension is on the Custom Build list for those who want more of a sport-tuned feel. Standard steering is a power-assisted, variable-speed rack-and-pinion setup. The C30 Version 1.0 has 17-inch wheels; the C30 Version 2.0 has 18-inchers.

Besides the patented front structure that's designed to provide protection in a frontal impact, the 2008 Volvo C30 uses different grades of steel in the rear for added protection in a rear-end collision. Standard safety items include ABS with Brake Assist, Dynamic Stability Traction Control, side curtain air bags, Volvo's whiplash protection system, side-impact air bags for front-row occupants, and Daytime Running Lights.

The C30 features a premium sound system that's optional on Version 1.0 and standard on 2.0. It includes a 650-watt amplifier; Dolby Pro-Logic II surround sound with digital sound processor; anti-theft LED; 10 Dynaudio speakers and auxiliary input jack; and an in-dash single CD player with MP3 playback capability. A DVD-based navigation system features a flip screen plus remote control operation. The navigation system is optional on Version 2.0, but is part of the Custom Build on 1.0 Versions. Rain-sensor windshield washers can detect moisture on the windshield, and will vary the speed of the wipers according to the speed of the vehicle as well as the amount of moisture on the windshield. The rain sensor is part of the optional Climate package that also includes heated front seats and headlamp washers.
