Overview

A modern take on the traditional minivan, the Volkswagen Routan shares a platform with comparable Chrysler minivans but is slightly more sporty and luxurious, according to Volkswagen. It competes with the Dodge Grand Caravan, Honda Odyssey, and Toyota Sienna, among others. The 2011 model features a new V-6 engine that boasts dramatically improved power and fuel efficiency compared to last year's model.The 2011 Volkswagen Routan offers a high level of customization. Four trim levels, and several option packages, are available. The entry-level Routan S trim features 16-inch steel wheels, air conditioning with separate rear controls, cruise control, keyless entry, second-row captain's chairs, some power accessories, and a 6-speaker sound system. The Routan SE trim steps up to 17-inch alloy wheels, upgrades the upholstery, pedals, sound system, and climate control, and adds more power accessories. The Routan SEL trim includes a navigation system, satellite radio, and power liftgate, all of which are optional on the SE, as well as a towing package, sunroof, leather upholstery, fog lights, and other upgrades. The Routan SEL Premium adds xenon headlights and rear park assist, and upgrades the sound system and other accessories. A rear-seat entertainment system is optional. Cargo capacity behind the rear seats is 32.7 cubic feet, but if all but the front seats are removed, total cargo space increases to 144 cubic feet, according to Volkswagen.The standard power plant in the 2011 Volkswagen Routan S and SE trims is a 283-horsepower, 3.8-liter V-6 engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It delivers 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.Standard safety features on the 2011 Volkswagen Routan include 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, stability control, traction control, front side air bags, driver's knee air bag, and side curtain air bags. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Routan highest-possible \"Good\" ratings for occupant protection in frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests.Starting MSRPs for the 2011 Volkswagen Routan range from just under $27,000 to the mid $40,000s.
