A modern take on the traditional minivan, the Volkswagen Routan shares a platform with comparable Chrysler minivans but is slightly more sporty-and luxurious-according to Volkswagen. It competes with the Dodge Grand Caravan, Honda Odyssey, and Toyota Sienna, among others. The 2010 model of the Routan is a carryover from the previous year.

The 2010 Volkswagen Routan offers a high level of customization. Four trim levels, and several option packages, are available. The entry-level Routan S trim features 16-inch steel wheels, tri-zone air conditioning, cruise control, keyless entry, and a 6-speaker sound system. The Routan SE trim steps up to 17-inch alloy wheels, upgrades the upholstery, pedals, sound system, and climate control, and adds more power accessories. The Routan SEL trim includes a navigation system, satellite radio, and power liftgate, all of which are optional on the Routan SE, as well as a towing package, sunroof, leather upholstery, fog lights, and other upgrades. The Routan SEL Premium adds Xenon headlights and rear park assist, and upgrades the sound system and other accessories. A rear-seat entertainment system is optional.

The standard power plant on the 2010 Volkswagen Routan S and SE trims is a 197-horsepower, 3.8-liter V-6 engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It delivers 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The Routan SEL and SEL Premium trims feature a 253-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 engine that delivers 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Standard safety features on the 2010 Volkswagen Routan include 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, stability control, traction control, and side curtain air bags. In government crash tests, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Routan 5 (out of 5) stars across the board in front- and side-impact tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave it the highest-possible \"Good\" ratings in frontal-offset and side-impact tests.

Starting MSRPs for the 2010 Volkswagen Routan ranged from $25,900 to $42,500.
