Toyota Prius v Pricing & Reviews

Shortly after the Great Recession and amidst a spike in gasoline prices, Toyota decided to turn the nameplate “Prius” into a sub-brand, applied to a family of fuel-efficient hybrid vehicles. Of the three resulting Prius models, the Prius V is the largest. The trade-off for the Prius V’s extra cargo capacity is a reduction in fuel economy. This model is EPA-rated to return around 41 mpg, compared with a standard Prius hatchback at 50 mpg. Why is this? The Prius V is heavier and is not as aerodynamic, factors negatively impacting its efficiency.
