- SE Sport trim level
The 2014 Toyota Camry is a midsize 4-door sedan that competes in one of the largest segments of the new-vehicle market. Long the best-selling car in America, the Camry faces competition in the form of the Buick Regal, Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler 200, Dodge Avenger, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy, and Volkswagen Passat.
Models and Features
Camry buyers choose first whether they want a 4-cylinder, V-6, or a gas-electric hybrid powertrain. Then, depending on this decision, the Camry is available in basic L, mid-grade LE, upscale XLE, or sporty SE trim levels.
All Camry L and LE trim levels have a 4-cylinder engine. The Camry LE adds upgraded headlights with automatic operation, variable intermittent wipers, remote keyless entry, and upgraded trim.
The Camry SE is available with a standard 4-cylinder engine or an optional V-6. The SE is a sport-tuned version of the Camry, equipped with a sport suspension, unique wheels and tires, heated exterior mirrors, and a more aggressive appearance including fog lights, a body kit, rear spoiler, and a mesh grille. Inside, the Camry SE has a leather-wrapped steering wheel with shifter paddles, silver interior trim, and seats equipped with SofTex leatherette bolsters and cloth inserts.
For 2014, a new Camry SE Sport version debuts, equipped only with a 4-cylinder engine combined with the larger 18-inch wheel design from the Camry SE V-6. Additional equipment for this trim level includes a power driver's seat and a power sunroof.
Both the 4-cylinder and the V-6 engines are available in the Camry XLE, which improves upon LE trim with 17-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, extra chrome trim, heated exterior mirrors, and a power sunroof. Inside, the Camry XLE gets upgraded fabric, a power driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, fake wood interior trim, and more.
The 2014 Camry Hybrid LE is better equipped than a standard Camry LE, including features like dual-zone automatic climate control, Smart Key keyless passive entry with push-button starting, and upgraded gauges and information displays. The Hybrid XLE comes with 17-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, heated exterior mirrors, a power driver's seat, and nicer trim inside and out.
Options and Packages
Toyota offers no factory options for the Camry L. Buyers choosing the Camry LE can get a power driver's seat and a power sunroof.
Options for the Camry SE are sometimes dependent on engine choice. The SE 4-cylinder can be upgraded with a power driver's seat, Smart Key system, navigation system, and Entune Apps Suite technology with HD Radio, satellite radio, Internet radio, iTunes tagging capability, and more. The SE V-6 is available with a premium audio system.
Regardless of engine choice, the Camry SE is offered with leather and Ultrasuede sport seats, heated front seats, a power front passenger's seat, reversing camera, power sunroof, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, universal garage door opener, and an anti-theft system with an alarm. Note, however, that the SE Sport version is available with a single upgrade in the form of a navigation system.
Choose the Camry XLE V-6 and the car comes with leather seats, heated front seats, a reversing camera, auto-dimming rearview mirror with a compass, and a universal garage door opener. Additional upgrades for the XLE trim level are similar to those offered on the SE, but the XLE is exclusively offered with JBL Greenedge speaker technology, a hard-drive navigation system, blind-spot monitoring system, and Toyota's Safety Connect service, which includes automatic collision notification and a stolen-vehicle locator.
For the Camry Hybrid, optional equipment is limited to the XLE variant. Upgrades include leather and Ultrasuede seats, heated front seats, a power front passenger's seat, power sunroof, and a premium audio system with JBL Greenedge speakers. Buyers can select between two different navigation systems, and this trim level is also available with Entune App Suite services, Safety Connect services, a reversing camera, blind-spot monitoring system, and more.
Under the Hood
Three different powertrains are available in the 2014 Toyota Camry. The L, LE, SE, and XLE come standard with a 178-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine (173 horsepower in Partial Zero Emission Vehicle tune). A 268-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine is optional for the Camry SE and XLE. Both are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. In SE versions, the transmission has paddle shifters.
The Camry Hybrid combines a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with an electric assist motor and a nickel metal-hydride battery pack to generate a combined 200 horsepower. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) delivers power to the front wheels, and a regenerative braking system recharges the battery pack. The Camry Hybrid is a \"full hybrid,\" meaning it can operate solely on electricity at low speeds and for short distances.
According to the EPA, the Camry 4-cylinder models get 25 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. Choose a Camry V-6, and estimates are 21 mpg city/31 mpg highway.
The Camry Hybrid's fuel-economy numbers depend on the trim level selected. The base LE version is the most fuel efficient at 43 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway. The XLE Hybrid's larger wheels and greater curb weight reduce those figures to 40 mpg and 38 mpg, respectively.
Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Camry receives a 5-star overall rating (out of 5 stars), the highest possible. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had not rated the 2014 Camry for crashworthiness as this overview was written.
Toyota offers a reversing camera only for Camry SE, XLE, and Hybrid XLE trim levels. The latter two variants can also be optioned with a blind-spot monitoring system, and Toyota reserves its Safety Connect services technology for the XLE and Hybrid XLE trim levels.
