The Scion FR-S was introduced for the 2013 model year as an all-new 4-passenger sports coupe, developed in conjunction with the Subaru BRZ, also introduced last year. According to Scion, its name stands for Front-engine, Rear-drive, Sport. For its second year, the coupe retains its original engineering but adds some interior conveniences.
Models and Features
The 2014 Scion FR-S is offered in a single trim level and in a choice of black, dark grey, ultramarine, dark red, burnt orange, silver, or white. Exterior features include 17-in. aluminum wheels wrapped in performance tires, power-folding exterior mirrors, dual exhaust, daytime running lights, auto-off headlights, and LED taillights. Standard interior equipment includes cloth upholstery; air conditioning; one-touch power windows; power door locks; height-adjustable driver's seat; leather-wrapped steering wheel with a shift knob; floor mats; remote keyless entry; engine immobilizer; rear window defogger; and cruise control. A 300-watt Pioneer audio system is also included, and features a new 6.1-in. touch screen with Bluetooth hands-free calling and music streaming, USB/iPod connection, auxiliary audio input jack, RCA output jacks, and HD Radio. The Scion FR-S also features a center-mounted tachometer with a programmable rev indicator, both digital and analog speedometers, and aluminum pedals. New padding on the insides of the doors and on the side of the center console protects the driver's and front passengers' knees.
Options and Packages
Several accessories are available for the 2014 Scion FR-S, including fog lights, paint-protection film, rear-bumper appliqu�, mudguards, wheel locks, and a rear spoiler. Interior options include an ashtray cup, carpeted trunk mat, cargo tote, all-weather floor mats, and a center armrest. Also optional is a BeSpoke premium audio system that includes an LCD color touch screen, multi-media connectivity through a special app, Pandora Internet radio, and iTunes tagging capability. Performance options include a premium dual exhaust, high-performance air filter, TRD lowering springs, and a sway bar kit.
Under the Hood
A Subaru-sourced, horizontally opposed, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine provides 200 horsepower and 151 lb.-ft. of torque. A 6-speed manual gearbox delivers power to the rear wheels. Optional is a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and Dynamic Rev Management.
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2014 Scion FR-S with manual transmission are 22 mpg city/30 mpg highway/25 mpg combined; with automatic transmission, 25/34/28 mpg.
Safety Ratings and Technology
The 2014 Scion FR-S is equipped with 6 air bags, 4-wheel ventilated-disc anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, and a traction and stability control system. The FR-S also includes Smart Stop technology, which is designed to prevent the car from accelerating if the brake pedal is depressed.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the 2014 Scion FR-S 4 stars (out of a possible 5) for frontal crash protection; 5 stars for side crash protection; and 5 stars for rollover protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the 2014 Scion FR-S its highest rating--\"Good\"--for roof strength, moderate overlap front crash protection, side crash protection, and head restraints and seats.
