Overview
Pontiac expands its G6 portfolio in 2008 with the addition of the all-new front-engine, front-wheel drive, midsize 4-passenger G6 coupe, 5-passenger sedan, and convertible. In addition, Pontiac offers its G6 GXP model and Street Edition package. Other high-performance GXP models from Pontiac include the 2008 Grand Prix, Solstice and Torrent.

Model Lineup
For 2008, Pontiac's G6 lineup includes coupe, sedan and convertible models, available as GT and GXP coupe; base sedan, GT sedan and GXP sedan; as well as base convertible models. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, console, analog instrumentation, cruise control, power door locks, and front bucket seats. Five packages are available on the sedan: Sport (available on base sedan); GT Preferred (available on base sedan); GXP Performance (available on GXP); Premium (available on GT); and Sun and Sound (available on base, GT and GXP models).

All GXP models include body-hugging, highly bolstered seats; racing-style gauges with true-red light-emitting diode (LED) instrument backlighting; automatic climate control; tachometer; and theft-deterrent system. Available options include heated seats; 6-way power-adjustable pedals; leather seating surfaces and leather-appointed seating with two-tone inserts; remote vehicle starting; and in-dash 6-disc CD changer. GXP coupe and sedan feature specific GXP sport-tuned suspensions; stability control; large, heavy-duty 4-wheel disc brakes and 4-channel anti-lock braking system. Base GXP models get 18-inch aluminum alloy painted flangeless 5-spoke wheels, while the Street Edition GXP (available in coupe and sedan) includes a new hood with scoops, hammerhead spoiler, and unique 18-inch wheels. Black chrome-finished 18-inch wheels are also available.

Two equipment packages are available on the G6 convertible. The Sport package includes a 3.9-liter V-6 sequential-fuel injection engine; exhaust outlets with dual chrome tips; 4-speed automatic transmission; 3.69 axle ratio; stability control; 18-inch alloy ultra bright 5-spoke flangeless wheels; front automatic air conditioning; and 6-way power driver seat adjuster. The Premium package includes remote vehicle starter; heated driver and front passenger seats; front bucket leather-appointed seats; 6-way power driver seat adjuster; power adjustable pedals; and front and rear carpeted floor mats.

Powertrain
There are four powertrains in the 2008 Pontiac G6 lineup. These include the Ecotec 2.4-liter 4-cylinder multi-port fuel injection engine that delivers 164 hp at 6400 rpm and 162 lb.-ft. of torque at 5000 rpm, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission; and a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with sequential fuel injection (SFI) that generates 219 hp at 5900 rpm and 219 lb.-ft. of torque at 3200 rpm, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, standard on GXP. The 3.6-liter V-6 engine with sequential fuel injection and variable valve timing (VVT) produces 252 hp at 6300 rpm and 251 lb.-ft. of torque at 3200 rpm. It's mated to an advanced, electronically controlled 6-speed automatic transmission. Standard in the convertible is the 3.5-liter V-6 engine with sequential fuel injection that delivers 217 hp at 5800 rpm and 217 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. The optional 3.9-liter V-6 engine with SFI generates 222 hp at 5600 rpm and 238 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm.

EPA fuel economy estimates for the family of G6 engines are as follows: 22 mpg city/30 mpg highway for the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine; 17 mpg city/26 mpg highway for the 3.5-liter V-6 engine; 17 mpg city/26 mpg highway for the 3.6-liter V-6 engine; and 15 mpg city/22 mpg highway for the 3.9-liter V-6 engine.

Safety
Standard safety features on the 2008 Pontiac G6 include GM's StabiliTrak dynamic stability control system; PASSLOCK theft-deterrent system; OnStar (one-year of service included); dual-stage frontal and side-impact air bags; driver and right-front passenger air bags with passenger sensing system; and 3-point safety belts with pre-tensioners for front-seat occupants.

Technology
A Monsoon high-performance 8-speaker sound system with high-mounted tweeters and sub-woofer are standard on GT and GXP models. Other technology features include power programmable body-colored outside mirrors; heat-rejecting Solar Ray light-tinted glass; stereo with 6-disc in-dash CD changer, Radio Data System, TheftLock, random disc function and graphic equalizer; Driver Information Center; and auxiliary input jack for an iPod/MP3 player. OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation, vehicle diagnostics and hands-free calling are also available.
