What's New for 2014:
  • Limited Edition package added as an option for S trim level
  • SV trim level gains color dashboard monitor, reversing camera, USB port, xenon headlights
  • Gun Metallic and Midnight Garnet paint colors

Billed by the automaker as the \"4-door sports car,\" the 2014 Nissan Maxima is a large sedan equipped with a V-6 engine, continuously variable transmission (CVT), and front-wheel drive. It competes against the Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Impala, Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Hyundai Azera, Kia Cadenza, and Toyota Avalon.

Models and Features
For the 2014 model year, the Nissan Maxima is offered in S and SV trim levels. Key differences for the Maxima SV include leather seats, a manual thigh extension and power lumbar support for the driver's seat, color in-dash monitor with a reversing camera, compass, and a universal garage door opener. The audio system includes a USB port, audio/video input jacks, and satellite radio, while exterior upgrades include xenon headlights, fog lights, and LED turn signal indicators for the outside mirrors.

Options and Packages
For 2014, the Maxima S is offered with a new Limited Edition package that adds xenon headlights, fog lights, LED turn signal indicators, a rear spoiler, and a Dark Hyper Silver wheel finish. A sport grille, smoked headlights, metallic interior trim, and a compass are also included in this package. Nissan dealers install additional options for the Maxima S.

Maxima SV buyers can add a Value package that includes heated front seats, heated side mirrors, heated steering wheel, and a premium audio system. Alternately, buyers can separate these features out by choosing just the premium audio system or just a Cold Weather package. A Tech package is also offered for the SV, adding a navigation system, Bluetooth streaming audio capability, and both NavTraffic and NavWeather reporting.

A Sport package contains 19-inch Dark Hyper Silver aluminum wheels, a sport suspension, trunk and chassis reinforcements, paddle shifters for the transmission, sport-design grille, smoked headlights, rear spoiler, and metallic interior trim. Alternatively, choose the Premium package for a dual-pane sunroof, interior mood lighting, power rear window sunshade, and Atlantic Cherry woodtone trim.

Both the Sport and Premium packages include premium leather upholstery, heated front seats, a ventilated driver's seat with an automatic entry/exit system, power tilt-and-telescoping and heated steering wheel, memory for the driver's settings, premium audio system, and a rear bucket seat design with a trunk pass-through. A Tech package is available with either the Sport package or the Premium package, while 19-inch summer performance tires are reserved for the Sport package.

Under the Hood
Every 2014 Nissan Maxima is equipped with a 290-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine and a CVT that feeds power to the car's front wheels. A Drive Sport driving mode and a manual shift gate are standard for the CVT, while paddle shifters are included only with the optional Sport package.

Fuel Economy
According to EPA estimates, the 2014 Maxima gets 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

Safety Ratings and Technology
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the 2014 Maxima an overall crash-test rating of 4 stars (out of 5 stars). Note, however, that in the frontal-impact test the car receives a 2-star rating for the front passenger, and in the side-impact test the Maxima delivers 3-star protection for the driver. While the Maxima receives an \"Acceptable\" rating in the new small overlap frontal-impact crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), this model also gets a \"Marginal\" rating for its ability to prevent injury in a rear-impact collision. In other assessments, the Maxima earns a (highest-possible) \"Good\" or \"Acceptable\" rating from the IIHS.
