Overview

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class, a 6- or 7-seat luxury crossover SUV, is available with gasoline or diesel power. It's a unibody model, longer and slightly lower than many of its competitors, such as the Lexus RX and the Cadillac SRX. The R-Class has been given a design refresh for 2011, inside and out, and now features a sleeker, sportier exterior, according to Mercedes.

Two trim levels are available on the 2011 Mercedes-Benz R-Class, corresponding to engine choice. Standard equipment on both the R350 4Matic and the R350 Bluetec includes 19-inch wheels, premium vinyl upholstery, the COMAND electronics interface, 8-speaker sound system, sunroof, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, and Bluetooth connectivity. The Premium I option package includes more power accessories (including liftgate), hard-drive-based navigation system, rearview camera, and satellite radio. The Premium II package adds keyless entry and ignition, and a Harman Kardon surround-sound system. The R350 4Matic may add 20-inch wheels via a Sport Appearance package. Stand-alone options include second-row bench seating, which brings passenger capacity to 7, a rear entertainment system, and much more. With the second- and third-row seats folded, cargo capacity is 85 cubic feet, according to the manufacturer.

Both versions of the 2011 Mercedes-Benz R-Class feature a 7-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes' proprietary 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. The R350 4Matic trim employs a 268-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine that delivers 14 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The R350 Bluetec's power plant is a 210-horsepower, 3.0-liter diesel engine (legal in all 50 states) that produces 400 lb.-ft. of torque and delivers 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.

Standard safety features on the 2011 Mercedes-Benz R-Class include anti-lock brakes, front- and second-row side air bags, side curtain air bags, electronic traction and stability control, a reactive pre-impact system, and mbrace emergency telematics. A rearview camera and parking sensors are optional. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the R-Class highest-possible \"Good\" ratings in all impact tests.

Depending on engine type, MSRPs for the 2011 Mercedes-Benz R-Class range from $50,240 to $51,740.
