  • Compact luxury SUV carries over mostly unchanged from previous year
  • Updated safety features
  • Slightly revised option packages

Introduction
The Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class is a small, luxurious SUV, available with either a V-6 or a more fuel-efficient diesel engine, that employs rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). It might be compared with the BMW X1 or X3, Audi Q5, and the Acura RDX. The GLK-Class comes with an array of sophisticated features, plus a long menu of custom options that includes packages as well as individual options and accessories. The 2014 model is virtually a carryover from the previous year.

Models and Features
The 5-passenger GLK-Class comes in a single trim level, with various opportunities for customization. Both the GLK250 Bluetec SUV (with the diesel engine) and the GLK350 SUV (with the V-6) come equipped with 19-in. alloy wheels, automatic headlights, LED running lights, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, 8-way power front seats with 4-way lumbar adjustment for the driver's seat, and vinyl upholstery. The Mercedes COMAND interface includes a 5.8-in. display screen, emergency communications, connectivity for phone and audio, and a 6-speaker sound system. The GLK-Class has 23.3 cu. ft. of cargo space behind the rear seats and up to 54.7 cu. ft. with the rear seats folded.

Options and Packages
Option packages, and individual enhancements, are available for both interior and exterior. On the outside, the Appearance package adds aluminum roof rails and 19-in., 5-spoke alloy wheels with all-season tires. The Lighting package adds bi-xenon headlights with active curve illumination, plus adaptive high-beam assist. The Sport package features AMG body styling, 19-in. AMG wheels, and aluminum roof rails. Individual enhancements include brushed aluminum running boards; 20-in., 12-spoke, 2-tone wheels; 19-in. or 20-in. 5-spoke wheels; chrome roof trim, roof spoiler, trunk handle, and various chrome enhancements.

On the interior, the Leather package includes a choice of several colors of leather upholstery for all seating surfaces, plus 3-position memory for the front passenger seat, and comfort-type head restraints. Burl walnut wood trim or aluminum trim are no-cost options; black ash wood trim is available at a small surcharge. Upgraded interior ambient lighting and a heated steering wheel are individual options; illuminated door sills are also available. The Premium 1 package includes a panoramic sunroof, power liftgate, SiriusXM radio with 6 months free, media interface, auto-dimming mirrors, integrated compass, garage door opener, and a power outlet in the cargo area. The Multimedia package includes a rearview camera, voice control, navigation system, upgraded media system, and SiriusXM traffic and weather. The interface and the SiriusXM service are available as stand-alone options. Other options include heated front seats, a Harman Kardon sound system, keyless ignition, rear-seat entertainment system, iPad docking station, in-vehicle Internet connectivity, and Becker Map Pilot (with pre-wiring). Parktronic with active parking assist, and a trailer hitch kit, are two other options. With the hitch, the GLK-Class can tow about 3,500 lbs., according to Mercedes.

Under The Hood
The 2014 GLK250 Bluetec SUV comes equipped with a 200-horsepower, 2.1-liter 4-cylinder diesel engine that makes 369 lb.-ft. of torque. The GLK350 SUV features a 302-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 273 lb.-ft. of torque. Both engines are mated with a 7-speed automatic transmission with manual paddle shifters. AWD is standard with the diesel engine, and optional with the V-6.

Fuel Economy
The EPA's fuel-economy ratings for the 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class are 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway/21 mpg combined for RWD models. The GLK350 with AWD returns 19/25/21 mpg. The GLK Bluetec's diesel engine is rated at 24/33/28 mpg.

Safety Ratings and Technology
Standard safety features on the 2014 GLK-Class include a full complement of air bags, front and rear head protection, advanced tire-pressure monitoring system, electronic stability program, rain-sensing wipers, anti-lock brakes, and brake assist. Many optional safety features are available, including the Driver Assistance package, which consists of the Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control system, active blind-spot assist, active lane-keeping assist, and upgraded brakes.

No crash-test ratings are yet available for the 2014 GLK-Class from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the GLK-Class its top rating of \"Good\" in moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact, and roof-strength crash tests.
