Exterior Features
Longer, wider and taller than before, the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is redesigned for 2013. Four models are offered, each equipped with 7-passenger seating in 3 rows of seats: GL350 BlueTec, GL450, GL550, and GL63 AMG. The GL63 AMG is covered in a separate overview.

Standard equipment for the GL350 BlueTec and GL450 includes 19-inch aluminum wheels, LED running lights, LED taillights, power liftgate, and aluminum roof rack rails. The GL550 model is equipped with modified styling, wheel-arch flares, and 21-inch AMG aluminum wheels.

Interior Features
The 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is equipped with standard wood cabin trim, MB-Tex leatherette upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, 8-way power-adjustable front seats with 4-way lumbar support for the driver, and a power-folding third-row seat. The GL-Class is also equipped with a power sunroof, universal garage door opener, 115-volt power outlet, and a COMAND infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity and music streaming capability, HD Radio, USB port, and an auxiliary audio input jack.

Optional Features
Mercedes offers several option packages for the 2013 GL350 BlueTec and GL450 models. The Premium 1 package includes 10-way power front seats with memory settings, power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, ambient cabin lighting, illuminated doorsills, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, power-folding side mirrors, and a hard-drive navigation system with enhanced voice control and a 10GB music register. A Premium 2 package includes these items, plus Keyless Go passive entry, soft-close doors, and a premium surround-sound audio system.

Additionally, the GL-Class is offered with a Lighting package (bi-xenon headlights with Active Curve Illumination, Adaptive High-beam Assist, headlamp washers); Lane Tracking package (blind-spot and lane-keeping assist); Driver Assistance package (active blind-spot and active lane-keeping assist, Distronic Plus active cruise control with Pre-Safe Brake); and a Parking Assist package (front and rear park-assist sensors with parking guidance, surround-view camera system).

The GL450 model can also be equipped with an Appearance package (20-inch aluminum wheels, illuminated running boards, chrome exhaust outlets) and an On-/Off-Road package (2-speed transfer case, 6-mode driving program selector, front underbody protection).

Options offered separately from packages include leather upholstery, triple-zone automatic climate control, panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, wood/leather steering wheel, multi-contour front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a rear-seat entertainment system. The GL-Class can also be equipped with 20-inch aluminum wheels, illuminated running boards, trailer hitch with a 7,500-pound towing capacity, adaptive damping for the suspension, and an Active Curve System.

The 2013 Mercedes GL550 comes standard with many of these extras. Options for this model are limited to the Driver Assistance package, On-/Off-Road package, Parking Assist package, rear-seat entertainment system, panoramic sunroof, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, and an Active Curve System.

Under the Hood
The Mercedes GL350 BlueTec has a turbo-diesel, 3.0-liter V-6 engine rated to produce 240 horsepower at 3,600 rpm and 455 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,600 rpm to 2,400 rpm.

The Mercedes GL450 has new, twin-turbocharged, 4.6-liter V-8 engine generating 362 horsepower from 5,000 rpm to 6,000 rpm and 406 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,500 rpm and 4,000 rpm.

The Mercedes GL550 has a more powerful version of the GL450's engine that generates 429 horsepower at 5,250 rpm and 516 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,800 rpm to 3,500 rpm.

All GL-Class models are equipped with a 7-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, and an Airmatic suspension.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class are:

  • GL350 BlueTec: 19/26/22 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • GL450: 14/19/16 mpg
  • GL550: 13/18/15 mpg

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is equipped with traction control, stability control system with trailer stability control and crosswind stabilization, and 4-wheel-disc brakes with brake assist, predictive brake priming, and automatic brake drying. Nine air bags are standard, including a knee air bag for the driver and side-impact air bags for rear-seat occupants. The GL is also equipped with Attention Assist drowsy driver detection technology, Pre-Safe cabin preparation technology for when a collision cannot be avoided, individual tire-pressure monitoring, rain-sensing wipers, and a reversing camera.

A new Collision Prevention Assist system is standard on the 2013 GL-Class. This technology identifies when the GL is closing too rapidly on traffic or stationary objects ahead, and automatically engages Adaptive Brake Assist to supply maximum braking power the moment the driver touches the brake pedal. The system can also engage Pre-Safe to prepare the GL's cabin and occupants for impact.

Safety-related options include passive and active versions of blind-spot assist and lane-keeping assist technologies, Distronic Plus active cruise control with Pre-Safe Brake, front and rear park-assist sensors, surround-view camera system, and bi-xenon headlights with Active Curve Illumination and Adaptive High-beam Assist.

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the 2013 Mercedes GL-Class as this overview is written.
