Under the Hood
A 5.5-liter V-8 engine is standard in the G550, which generates 382 horsepower and 391 lb.-ft. of torque. The V-8 drives all 4 wheels through a 7-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and a permanent all-wheel-drive system with a 2-speed transfer case and center, rear, and front sequential locking differentials. A standard 4-wheel electronic traction control system helps ensure that the G550 continues forward movement even if 3 wheels have lost contact with the road.
The G550 is equipped with solid front and rear axles, tows up to 7,500 pounds, and boasts 8 inches of ground clearance.
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz G550 are 12/15/13 mpg (city/highway/combined).
The 2013 Mercedes-Benz G550 is equipped with 4 standard air bags including dual frontal-impact air bags and side curtain air bags for the outboard seating positions. The 4-wheel-disc braking system includes brake assist, predictive brake priming, brake drying, hill-start assist, and hold assist, and the anti-lock function works only when all three differentials are unlocked. Traction control, stability control, trailer stability assist, rain-sensing wipers, and front and rear park-assist sensors are also included on the G-Class, as well as Distronic Plus active cruise control with PreSafe Brake technology, blind-spot monitoring system, reversing camera, and individual tire-pressure monitoring.
