What's New for 2014:
  • New entry-level 4-door with coupe-like styling
  • At launch, base price under $30,000
  • CLA250 on sale first, followed by CLA45 AMG
  • Based heavily on Concept Style Coupe show car

In a bid to attract younger buyers to the Mercedes-Benz brand, the automaker launches the CLA-Class with what it calls concept-car styling and a starting price of less than $30,000. The CLA-Class is the latest model demonstrating the erosion of clearly defined boundaries between mainstream brands and luxury brands. The CLA's nearest luxury-branded competitors include the Acura TSX, Audi A3, BMW 320i, Lexus CT 200h, and Volvo S60.

Models and Features
Initially, the new 2014 Mercedes CLA is offered only as the CLA250. A performance-tuned CLA45 AMG is due to arrive at a later date.

Standard equipment includes MB-Tex leatherette upholstery, 14-way power front seats with 4-way adjustable lumbar support and memory settings for the driver, a premium leather-wrapped steering wheel, 60/40 split-folding rear seat with outboard sport bolstering, and ambient cabin lighting. The driver faces instrumentation including a 4.5-inch display nestled between the gauges and a tablet-style 5.8-inch screen mounted in the dashboard.

An mBrace2 telematics system with a smartphone application and in-car Internet connectivity is also standard, along with Bluetooth hands-free calling and music streaming, HD Radio, and a USB port. The new CLA250 rides on 17-inch aluminum wheels with run-flat tires and is equipped with standard rain-sensing wipers.

Options and Packages
The Mercedes-Benz CLA is offered in three standard shades of paint. Metallic and matte-finish colors cost extra, as do 18-inch aluminum wheels, leather seats, wood interior trim, and leatherette for the upper portions of the dashboard and door panels.

Buyers can also option the CLA-Class with bi-xenon headlights with LED running lights and LED taillights, a panoramic sunroof, and front and rear park-assist sensors with Active Parking Assist technology.

Four option packages are available for the CLA. A Premium package adds dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, a premium audio system with satellite radio, auto-dimming mirrors, compass, and a universal garage door opener. A Multi-media package includes a reversing camera, hard-drive navigation system with enhanced voice control and a larger 7-inch dash-mounted display screen, 10-gig Music Register with Gracenote media database, 6-disc CD/DVD changer, SD card reader, and real-time traffic and weather.

Additionally, the CLA250 is available with a Driver Assistance package (adaptive cruise control, Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Collision Prevention Assist Plus) and a Sport package (AMG body kit, 18-inch AMG twin 5-spoke aluminum wheels, performance tires, chrome diamond block grille, perforated front brake discs with painted calipers).

Under the Hood
The Mercedes-Benz CLA250 is equipped with a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 208 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. Peak torque is available from 1,250 rpm, and a 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) feeds the power to the CLA's front wheels. Shift paddles give the driver manual control over gear changes, and the transmission includes Eco, Sport, and Manual driving modes.

A standard engine start/stop system is designed to turn the engine off when idling in traffic or at an intersection to help conserve fuel. The CLA is also equipped with a standard sport-tuned suspension and electric steering with Steer Control, which Mercedes says will \"enhance the car's precise tracking around a curve.\"

Fuel Economy
As this overview is written, the EPA has not established official fuel-economy estimates for the 2014 Mercedes CLA-Class.

Safety Ratings and Technology
Crash tests have not been performed on the new Mercedes CLA as this overview is written.

Standard safety equipment includes 8 air bags with 10-way protection, Emergency Tensioning Device seat belts designed to remove slack upon impact and then lessen peak seat belt force on the occupant, and an adaptive braking system with Predictive Brake Priming, Automatic Brake Drying, hill-start assist, and Brake Hold. The CLA is also equipped with Attention Assist drowsy driver monitoring and a radar-based Collision Prevention Assist system with Adaptive Brake Assist.

Safety-related options include a reversing camera, front and rear park-assist sensors, adaptive cruise control, Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Collision Prevention Assist Plus.
