    Exterior Features
    The Mazda MX-5 Miata is a 2-seat roadster offered in three trim levels. All come standard with a manually operated vinyl soft top that includes a glass rear window, while a power-retractable hardtop is available on the two upper trim levels. Standard equipment includes 16-inch cast-aluminum wheels.

    Interior Features
    Standard features on the 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata include a 6-speaker sound system, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and power windows and mirrors.

    Optional Features
    The 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata offers a number of options in packages for the upper trim levels, including 17-inch wheels, fog lights, cruise control, power door locks, keyless entry, auto-dimming rearview mirror, trip computer, leather-wrapped shift knob, leather upholstery, heated seats, 7-speaker Bose audio system, Xenon headlights, Bluetooth connectivity, and satellite radio. The Appearance package includes many of those options plus a unique front spoiler and rocker sills.

    Under the Hood
    The 2012 MX-5 Miata is powered by a 2.0-liter, inline 4-cylinder engine rated at 167 horsepower and mated with a standard 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 6-speed transmission. A 6-speed automatic transmission is available, but reduces power to 158 horsepower.

    EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata are:
    • MX-5 Miata with 5-speed manual transmission: 22/28/24 mpg (city/highway/combined)
      • MX-5 Miata with either 6-speed manual or automatic transmission: 21/28/24 mpg

        Safety
        Standard safety equipment on the 2012 MX-5 Miata includes side air bags and stability and traction control.

        To date, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have tested the 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata.
