Exterior Features
The 2013 Mazda CX-9 is a 7-passenger, midsize crossover SUV offered in Sport, Touring and Grand Touring trim levels. For 2013, the CX-9 gets new front styling aligned with Mazda's new Kodo design ethos. The rear of the SUV is also updated this year, and includes redesigned taillights and dual round exhaust outlets.

Standard equipment for the 2013 Mazda CX-9 Sport includes 18-inch aluminum wheels, power exterior mirrors, and dark-tinted rear privacy glass.

Interior Features
The updated 2013 Mazda CX-9 Sport is equipped with cloth seats, height-adjustable driver's seat, power windows with one-touch operation for the front glass, power door locks with remote keyless entry, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, trip computer, outside temperature display, and triple-zone automatic climate control. Bluetooth hands-free calling and music streaming is also standard, along with a 6-speaker stereo equipped with HD Radio, CD player, USB port, and an auxiliary audio input jack.

The Mazda CX-9 can carry 17.8 cubic feet of cargo behind the third-row seat, 48.3 cubic feet of cargo behind the second-row seat, and a maximum of 100.7 cubic feet of cargo with both rear rows of seats folded down.

Optional Features
The Mazda CX-9 Sport can be optioned with an 8-way power driver's seat, heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors, and an extra-cost Crystal White Pearl paint color.

The 2013 Mazda CX-9 Touring adds power driver's seat, heated exterior mirrors, and heated front seats, as well as leather upholstery, 4-way power front passenger's seat, and an upgraded woven headliner. Auto-off headlights, reversing camera, rear park-assist sensors, and a blind-spot monitoring system are also standard on the Touring trim level.

Options for the CX-9 Touring include extra-cost white paint and a Touring Technology package equipped with a 10-speaker Bose Centerpoint audio system, navigation system with real-time traffic, keyless entry with push-button ignition, power sunroof, power rear liftgate, satellite radio, and fog lights.

The 2013 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring is equipped with 20-inch aluminum wheels in a Satin Chrome finish, chrome door handles, rain-sensing wipers, side marker lights in the exterior mirror housings, fog lights, bi-xenon headlights, and LED running lights. This version is also equipped with memory settings for the driver's seat and side mirrors, power liftgate, auto-dimming rearview mirror, universal garage door opener, anti-theft alarm, and keyless entry with push-button ignition. The cabin gets upgraded Bordeaux interior trim and a storage bin in second-row armrest.

Options for the Grand Touring trim include white pearl paint, rear-seat entertainment system with a 115-volt power outlet, and a GT Technology package with a Bose Centerpoint premium audio system, navigation system, power sunroof, and satellite radio.

In addition to these options, Mazda dealers can install a number of accessories on the CX-9.

Under the Hood
Every 2013 Mazda CX-9 is equipped with a 3.7-liter V-6 engine generating 273 horsepower at 6,250 rpm and 270 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,250 rpm. A 6-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift gate is standard, delivering power to the SUV's front wheels.

An active torque-split all-wheel-drive system is optional, and includes a Towing package with a heavy-duty transmission cooler and radiator fan, and a 3,500-pound trailer tow rating.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Mazda CX-9 are:

  • CX-9 2WD: 17/24/19 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • CX-9 4WD: 16/22/18 mpg

Safety
The 2013 Mazda CX-9 is equipped with 6 standard air bags, including side curtain air bags for all three rows of seats. Traction control, stability control, and roll stability control are also standard, as well as a 4-wheel ventilated disc anti-lock braking system. The Touring and Grand Touring include a blind-spot monitoring system, reversing camera, and rear park-assist sensors.

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has assigned crash-test ratings for the 2013 Mazda CX-9 as this overview is written.
