Overview

The Mazda CX-9 is the automaker's midsize crossover SUV-a 7-passenger model now in its fifth year of production. It shares an engine and vehicle platform with the Ford Edge. It is available with front- or all-wheel drive (FWD or AWD).

The base Mazda CX-9 Sport features 18-inch alloy wheels, a trip computer, Bluetooth connectivity, tri-zone automatic climate control, and steering-wheel-mounted controls for the 6-speaker sound system and the cruise control. The CX-9 Touring trim includes leather upholstery with heated front seats, as well as heated mirrors. The Grand Touring trim has 20-inch wheels, keyless entry and ignition, many interior upgrades, Xenon headlights, and fog lights. Sliding second-row seats and fold-down third-row seats are standard on all CX-9 trims. Both of the back rows can fold flat, resulting in a maximum of 101 cubic feet of cargo space, according to Mazda. Maximum towing capacity is 3500 pounds.

The standard power plant in all 2011 Mazda CX-9s is a 273-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 engine, coupeed with a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift controls. According to the EPA, the Mazda CX-9 delivers 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway with FWD; 16/22 with available AWD.

Standard safety features on the 2011 Mazda CX-9 include anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, stability control with rollover sensor, traction control, active head restraints, front side air bags and side curtain air bags. A rearview camera is optional on the Touring and Grand Touring trims, and the Grand Touring trim features a blind-spot warning system. In government crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Mazda CX-9 received 5 (out of 5) stars in front-impact tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the CX-9 highest-possible \"Good\" ratings in frontal-offset, side-impact, and rear-impact tests.
