Hoping to cash in on the enthusiast halo surrounding the legendary RX-7 nameplate, Mazda named this midsize crossover SUV the CX-7. The CX-7 was sold from 2007 to 2012. Smaller than its primary competitors, and limiting passenger capacity to 5, the Mazda CX-7 emphasized style and performance over utility. It came only with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, which was not particularly fuel-efficient. Odd sizing combined with unimpressive gas mileage made the CX-7 a tough sell during the U.S. recession and a period of time when fuel prices skyrocketed. Mazda elected to discontinue the CX-7 after a single design cycle.
