  • Two new shades of blue debut: Blue Reflex and Deep Crystal Blue

Introduction
The 2015 Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV that seats 5 people. It competes against a long list of alternatives in the segment, including the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Patriot, Kia Sportage, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Models and Features
When buying a Mazda CX-5, consumers choose among the Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring trim levels. The Sport is the only one offered with a manual gearbox, and is the only one available with a 155-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. Highlights from the standard equipment list include 17-in. aluminum wheels, air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, 60/40 split-folding rear seatback, and a 4-speaker audio system.

Upgrade to Touring trim and the CX-5 gets a larger and more powerful engine, automatic transmission, and a more practical 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat. The Touring version also adds a blind-spot monitoring system, Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry system, additional stereo speakers, and a 5.8-in. color touch-screen display with a reversing camera. Bluetooth connectivity is standard for this trim level, along with text message receipt and reply technology, E911 Automatic Emergency Notification, HD Radio, and Pandora Internet radio. Mazda also upgrades the Touring version's interior materials, adds a power driver seat, and installs dark-tinted rear privacy glass.

The CX-5 Grand Touring is the top-of-the-line trim level, featuring leather seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, premium audio system, power sunroof, and larger 19-in. aluminum wheels. Automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, heated front seats, and heated side mirrors are also standard for the Grand Touring version.

Under the Hood
Mazda installs a 155-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine in the CX-5 Sport, one equipped with the automaker's fuel-saving SkyActiv technology. It comes with a 6-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive (FWD). A 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive (AWD) are options.

The CX-5 Touring and Grand Touring have a 184-horsepower, 2.5-liter SkyActiv 4-cylinder engine. A 6-speed automatic feeds the power to the crossover SUV's front wheels, and an AWD system is optional.

Fuel Economy
For maximum fuel economy, buyers should choose the CX-5 Sport, which gets between 25 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, depending on transmission choice and whether or not it is equipped with AWD. The CX-5 Touring and Grand Touring are rated to return between 24 mpg in the city with AWD and 32 mpg on the highway with FWD.

Safety and Technology
Mazda installs a reversing camera and a blind-spot monitoring system in every CX-5 Touring and Grand Touring. These SUVs also include Bluetooth connectivity with hands-free calling and music streaming, text-messaging capability, and E911 Automatic Emergency Notification, while the Grand Touring adds rain-sensing wipers.

Options, depending on the trim level, include an adaptive front-lighting system and a Smart City Brake Support System. The latter operates at speeds between 2 mph and 18 mph, able to identify situations when a low-speed impact may occur and automatically applying the brakes in order to reduce speed prior to impact, or to prevent a collision.
