With the introduction of the CX-5, a 5-passenger compact crossover SUV, Mazda clipped an apex of reinvention. The CX-5 was the first Mazda crafted to the company’s new “Kodo” design philosophy, and it was one of the first Mazdas equipped with the automaker’s SkyActiv fuel-efficient gasoline engines. Replacing the Tribute in Mazda’s lineup, the original CX-5 became a sales success. A second-generation version arrived for 2017, refining the CX-5’s original recipe and adding improved quality, technology, and driving dynamics as the automaker began a serious push to position itself as a premium brand.
