Luxury brand Lexus enters the 1998 model year with two all-new models. Lexus' midrange, rear-wheel drive GS line receives a bold restyle and feisty engine power from powerplants using variable valve timing. The 1998 Lexus GS 300 features a 3.0-liter V-6 while the GS 400 operates with a 300-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-8. A new version of Lexus's full-size luxury sport utility vehicle also arrives in 1998. Now powered by a 4.7-liter V-8 engine, the 1998 Lexus LX 470 sports a more civilized exterior appearance and more luxury tailoring inside. Lexus' two-door, 2+2 passenger SC 300 and SC 400 both receive powerplant enhancements for 1998. The 1998 Lexus SC 400's new 290-horsepower 4.0-liter V-8 features variable valve timing and is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting abilities. A new five-speed automatic gearbox is also found in the 1998 Lexus LS 400 along with the addition of Vehicle Stability Control. Door-mounted side airbags are now standard on the Lexus ES 300.
