Introduction
The 2015 ES is one of the more affordable Lexus sedans, yet it is equipped with a full-size interior that makes this model difficult to classify. Primary competitors include the Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac XTS, Chrysler 300, Lincoln MKZ and MKS, and Volvo S80.

Models and Features
Two versions of the 2015 Lexus ES are available. The ES 300h has a gas-electric hybrid powertrain, while the ES 350 is equipped with a conventional V-6 engine. Both versions of the car can be upgraded with option packages and individually available extras.

Under the Hood
A 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine forms the basis for the Lexus ES 300h model's hybrid powertrain. It is paired with an electric assist motor, battery pack, and a regenerative braking system that recharges the battery as the car is driven. Owners never need to plug the ES 300h into an electrical socket to recharge the battery.

The result is a combined 200 horsepower. That might not sound substantial, but the electric assist motor contributes quite a bit of torque the moment the driver presses down on the accelerator pedal, and that's why the ES 300h can accelerate to 60 mph in a reasonable 8.1 seconds, according to Lexus.

Making 268 horsepower, the ES 350's 3.5-liter V-6 engine improves acceleration to 60 mph by a full second. The ES 350 also has a traditional 6-speed automatic transmission instead of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) like the one in the ES 300h. Buyers also save nearly $2,900 by selecting the ES 350 over the ES 300h, but the hybrid is definitely more efficient with each gallon of gas it consumes.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the 2015 Lexus ES 350 is rated to get 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Compare that with the ES 300h, which is rated to return 40 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway.

Safety and Technology
Every 2015 Lexus ES is equipped with a reversing camera as standard equipment, as well as Lexus Enform Safety Connect service with a free subscription for the first year of ownership. Safety Connect can automatically contact and dispatch rescuers to the scene of any accident in which the air bags have deployed, help with other emergencies, and even assist owners in the event the car has been stolen.

Options for the 2015 ES include Lexus Enform App Suite and Enform Remote services, a 15-speaker surround-sound audio system, blind-spot monitoring system, lane-departure warning system, rear cross-traffic alert technology, and a dynamic cruise control system with pre-collision warning and braking functions.
