The 2014 Jeep Wrangler is an SUV designed for serious off-roading, and is offered in 2-door or 4-door format, the latter called the Wrangler Unlimited.

Models and Features
Jeep sells the 2014 Wrangler in four core trim levels called Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon. Additionally, for 2014, buyers can select a Freedom Edition, Polar Edition, Dragon Edition, and a Rubicon X model.

Standard equipment includes 4-wheel drive (4WD), a full-size spare tire, skid plates, tow hooks, removable soft top, removable full-metal doors, fold-down windshield, folding side mirrors, and a heater. In a nod to modernity, there is a 6-speaker stereo with audio input jacks.

The Sport S trim level adds air conditioning, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dark-tinted windows for the soft top, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. It is also offered with a greater array of options.

The Sahara upgrades the Wrangler with power heated side mirrors, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, a premium sound system with satellite radio, and a 115-volt 3-prong power outlet. The Sahara also has a heavy-duty suspension, automatic headlights, special interior and exterior trim, and 18-inch wheels.

The Rubicon is the hard-core off-road version. It has 32-inch wheels and tires, a Rock-Trac 4WD system, Dana 44 front axle, Tru-Lok locking front and rear axles, revised axle ratios, electronic front sway bar disconnect, performance suspension, and rock rails. It also does without many of the conveniences that are included for the Sahara.

For 2014, the Wrangler Freedom Edition returns. Based on the Wrangler Sport S, it is offered in a Hydro Blue color in addition to five others. Special exterior trim, rock rails, taillight guards, and unique graphics are included for the Freedom Edition. This version also has power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, Uconnect Bluetooth, and more. Jeep donates $250 to the USO as part of its Jeep Operation Safe Return program for each Freedom Edition it sells.

A new Polar Edition is on sale for 2014, painted silver, white, or Hydro Blue. It is based on the Wrangler Sahara and features black exterior trim, unique black- and machined-finish 18-inch wheels, a special hood graphic, rock rails, hard cover for the spare tire, and a standard hardtop. Inside, leather seats, heated front seats, and white interior accents set this SUV apart.

The new Dragon Edition is also based on the Sahara, but is offered only as the 4-door Wrangler Unlimited. Painted black, the Dragon Edition includes Satin Bronze exterior and interior trim, Matte Black 18-inch wheels, a gray dragon hood and fender decal, hard cover for the spare tire, black premium leather for the seats, heated front seats, Gloss Black cabin trim, lots of dragon-theme logos, and other upgrades.

The new-for-2014 Wrangler Rubicon X adds steel bumpers, winch-ready in front with removable front bumper end caps. Additionally, this version has a dual-intake power dome hood, red tow hooks, wider rock rails, and a 73.1:1 crawl ratio. Inside, the Rubicon X is equipped with leather seats, heated front seats, and more.

Options and Packages
Depending on the trim level selected, the 2014 Wrangler can be optioned with numerous upgrades from both the factory and, through a Mopar parts catalog, through the dealer. Highlights include leather seats, heated front seats, automatic climate control, navigation system, Bluetooth with streaming audio, satellite radio, premium speakers, 115-volt 3-prong power outlet, and a 3-piece hardtop.

Under the Hood
Every 2014 Jeep Wrangler is equipped with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine making 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a 5-speed automatic transmission optional. A Command-Trac 4WD system with a 2-speed transfer case is also included for every model, along with a special oil sump designed to handle extreme driving angles and a high-mounted alternator that allows for maximum water fording capability. Jeep says that the Wrangler supplies class-leading approach, breakover, and departure angles. When properly equipped, the Wrangler tows 3,500 lbs.

Fuel Economy
No matter which trim level you choose, or which transmission, or which 4WD system, the 2014 Wrangler is estimated by the EPA to return 17 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. The 4-door Wrangler Unlimted 4WD achieves 16 mpg in the city and 20-21 mpg on the highway, depending on transmission.

Safety Ratings and Technology
All Wranglers are equipped with front air bags, stability control, an electronic roll-mitigation system, trailer sway control, hill-start assist, and Brake Traction Control. Side-impact air bags for the front-seat occupants are an option.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not rated the 2014 Wrangler's performance in crash tests. However, for rollover resistance, the NHTSA gives the 2014 Jeep Wrangler 3 stars (out of 5 stars). In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Wrangler 2-door model receives a highest-possible \"Good\" rating in the moderate overlap frontal-impact test, a \"Marginal\" rating in the small overlap frontal-impact and the rear-impact injury prevention tests, and a \"Poor\" rating in the side-impact test.

The IIHS gives the 4-door 2014 Wrangler Unlimited a \"Good\" rating in the moderate overlap frontal-impact test, and a \"Marginal\" rating in the side-impact test and the rear-impact injury prevention test.

The United States government was looking for an inexpensive and rugged off-road reconnaissance car, so they asked dozens of companies to submit bids. After a series of tests, the contract was awarded to Willys. The original "model MB" was soon nicknamed the "Jeep," and the name stuck. The company was bought by AMC in 1970, and then sold to its current owner, Chrysler, in 1998.
