It offers an Active Drive Low 4x4 system with 20:1 crawl ratio; class-exclusive Selec-Terrain dial featuring five settings, including Rock mode; 0.8-in. lift with off-road suspension and hill-descent control; 17-in. off-road aluminum wheels with aggressive tires; and red tow hooks, skid plates, off-road fascias, black accent roof and roof rails.

Options and Packages
The 2015 Jeep Renegade offers many options and upgrades. Some features offered as standard on upper trim levels are optional on lower versions of the SUV. Possibilities include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather seats, passive entry/keyless go, navigation system, color-coordinated interior accent trim, and a 7-in. information display in the vehicle's gauge cluster. Two different MySky sunroof options are offered: a manual canvas cover or a dual-panel power glass opening. Jeep also offers its Uconnect Access system featuring 911 Connect, text-messaging capability, an Assist button to summon roadside assistance, and more. A premium sound system is available; so are upgraded wheels and a spare tire. Packages include the Trailer Tow Group, Safety and Security Group, and Advanced Technology Group.

Under the Hood
Standard on the Renegade Sport and Latitude is a 1.-4 liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing 160 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque, available with either a 6-speed manual transmission or class-exclusive 9-speed automatic. A 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard on the 2015 Jeep Renegade Limited and Trailhawk--the same engine found in the Jeep Cherokee. In the Renegade, it makes 180 horsepower and 175 lb.-ft. of torque. Manual transmission is standard and a 9-speed automatic with manual gear selection is available. Jeep intends to add an optional 2.0-liter diesel engine to the 2015 Renegade, available with the 9-speed automatic, that the automaker claims will be able to tow up to 3,300 lbs.

A 4-wheel independent suspension is standard for the Renegade, and offers up to 8.1 in. of wheel articulation. Jeep uses Koni frequency damping front and rear struts for the suspension, and the Renegade Trailhawk delivers 8.7 in. of ground clearance in combination with greater approach, breakover, and departure angles, according to Jeep. Jeep adds that the Renegade Trailhawk can ford 19 in. of standing water.

The United States government was looking for an inexpensive and rugged off-road reconnaissance car, so they asked dozens of companies to submit bids. After a series of tests, the contract was awarded to Willys. The original "model MB" was soon nicknamed the "Jeep," and the name stuck. The company was bought by AMC in 1970, and then sold to its current owner, Chrysler, in 1998.
