Styled to resemble the boxy Jeep Cherokee that went out of production after the 2001 model year, the Jeep Patriot is a 5-passenger crossover SUV designed to offer genuine off-roading capability (when properly equipped). The Patriot competes against other compact crossovers including the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Models and Features
Jeep sells the 2014 Patriot in Sport, Latitude, and Limited trim levels. The Patriot Sport includes premium cloth seats, 60/40-split folding rear seat, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, and floor mats. Sport owners crank their own windows up and down to cool the Patriot's interior, and push a button to lock and unlock the doors, yet this model is equipped with illuminated cupholders, a removable and rechargeable flashlight, outside temperature indicator, dark-tinted rear privacy glass, and fog lights.

Moving up to Latitude trim makes air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, and power heated exterior mirrors standard equipment, as well as remote keyless entry, a driver's seat height adjuster, front passenger's seat that folds in half, heated front seats, and reclining rear seats. Patriot Latitude models also include 17-inch aluminum wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, and a 115-volt power outlet.

In addition to a more powerful engine, a 6-speed automatic transmission, and 4-wheel-disc brakes, the Patriot Limited adds automatic climate control, leather, power driver's seat, vehicle information center, upgraded audio system with one free year of satellite radio service, and nicer trim inside and out.

Options and Packages
The Patriot Sport can be optioned with a Power Value Group including power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, and power heated exterior mirrors. Air conditioning is also optional for this model, along with a better stereo, Uconnect Bluetooth connectivity, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.

Options for the Patriot Latitude include option packages containing a power sunroof, premium sound with rear liftgate speakers, Uconnect Bluetooth, auto-dimming rearview mirror, universal garage door opener, trailer towing equipment, and more. Additionally, this model offers a hard-drive audio system, 6.5-inch touch-screen display, and remote engine starting.

Limited models can be outfitted with many of the same options offered for the Patriot Latitude, plus a navigation system.

Under the Hood
Patriot Sport and Patriot Latitude models with front-wheel drive (FWD) are equipped with a standard 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 158 horsepower and 141 lb.-ft. of torque. A more powerful 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine is included with one of the optional 4-wheel-drive (4WD) systems and comes standard in the Patriot Limited. This engine is rated to generate 172 horsepower and 165 lb.-ft. of torque.

The Sport and Latitude models are equipped with a standard 5-speed manual gearbox. A new 6-speed automatic transmission is standard for the Limited model and included with the larger 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine option for the Sport and Latitude models.

Two 4WD systems are offered for the Patriot. Freedom Drive I provides full-time operation and a lock mode for better traction, while Freedom Drive II is part of an Off-Road package including a special continuously variable transmission (CVT), hill-start assist, hill-descent control, brake-lock differential, raised suspension, all-terrain tires, skid plate for the fuel tank, tow hooks, and a full-size spare tire.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, 2014 Jeep Patriot fuel-economy estimates range between 21 mpg in the city for models with the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and the Freedom Drive II 4WD system, to 30 mpg on the highway for the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, 5-speed manual gearbox, and FWD.

Safety Ratings and Technology
As this overview is written, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not officially rated the 2014 Patriot's crashworthiness. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the 2014 Patriot its top rating of \"Good\" for all crash-test assessments except for the new small overlap frontal-impact test, which is designed to measure protection levels in the event the Patriot strikes a tree, pole, or oncoming vehicle on its left front corner. In this test, the Patriot received a \"Poor\" rating.

For 2014, Jeep makes side-impact air bags standard equipment. Previously, they were optional. Note, however, that side curtain air bags were standard last year.
