The Jeep Patriot is a compact crossover SUV, closely related to the Jeep Compass. Both are based on the same platform, but the Patriot is marketed as a more traditional, conservative version of the vehicle. For 2011, Jeep has added several performance upgrades to the Patriot.

The 2011 Jeep Patriot is offered in the base trim, upgraded Latitude, and the top-line Latitude X. The base model features 16-inch steel wheels, cruise control, fog lights, roof rails, and a 4-speaker sound system. The Patriot Latitude steps up to 17-inch alloy wheels, and adds air conditioning, a trip computer, keyless entry and ignition, and other enhancements. The Patriot Latitude X upgrades the climate control to automatic, and adds leather upholstery, various power accessories, and a larger engine. Various option packages are available at all three levels, and can add safety features, Bluetooth, sunroof, upgraded sound system, and much more. An Off-Road package adds all-terrain tires, skid plates, a low-range gear, and more.

For the base and Latitude trims with front-wheel drive, a 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard. That engine delivers 23 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway with the standard 5-speed manual transmission; a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional. The 4-wheel-drive (4WD) base and Latitude trims, and the Latitude X, employ a 172-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder and a 5-speed manual transmission. Options include the CVT, and two 4WD alternatives: one geared to off-road use and available only with the CVT, and the other intended for lighter duty.

Standard safety features on the 2011 Jeep Patriot include anti-lock brakes (all disc in the Latitude X trim and with 4WD; rear drum brakes on other models), stability control, traction control, side curtain air bags. Front side air bags are optional. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2011 Jeep Patriot highest-possible \"Good\" ratings in frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests, but the side-impact rating dropped to \"Marginal\" without the front side air bags.

Starting MSRP for the 2011 Jeep Patriot was $15,995.

The United States government was looking for an inexpensive and rugged off-road reconnaissance car, so they asked dozens of companies to submit bids. After a series of tests, the contract was awarded to Willys. The original "model MB" was soon nicknamed the "Jeep," and the name stuck. The company was bought by AMC in 1970, and then sold to its current owner, Chrysler, in 1998.
