Overview

What's New for 2014:
  • Renamed--formerly known as the Infiniti QX56
  • Revised Technology package

Introduction
The 2014 Infiniti QX80 is a full-size, body-on-frame SUV that had previously worn the QX56 badge. Equipped with standard V-8 power and seating for up to 8 occupants, the QX80 competes with other luxury SUV models such as the Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, Lincoln Navigator and Navigator L, and Land Rover Range Rover.

Models and Features
While Infiniti does grant buyers the choice of rear-wheel drive (RWD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD), there is just one trim level. However, being a luxury-branded model, the 2014 QX80 is what many would likely deem well-equipped. Among the SUV's many standard features are 20-in. alloy wheels, automatic HID headlights, power-folding heated turn signal mirrors, power tilt/slide moonroof, and a power-operated liftgate. The collection of amenities continues with heated power front seats, leather upholstery, second-row captain's chairs and a power-folding third-row 60/40 split-bench seat, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, 13-speaker surround-sound system with Bluetooth streaming audio and iPod compatibility, push-button start, and tri-zone automatic climate control.

On top of that, the 2014 Infiniti QX80 boasts an 8-in. touch-screen center display, navigation system with real-time traffic information, and a 360-degree exterior camera system.

Options and Packages
In addition to massive 22-in. alloy wheels and a second-row 60/40 split-bench seat that increases seating capacity from 7 to 8, the QX80 is available with a Deluxe Touring package comprised of a 15-speaker surround-sound system, headlight washers, premium leather upholstery, wood interior accents, and a hydraulic suspension system engineered to limit body roll and improve ride comfort, according to Infiniti.

Among the available options is a Technology package, within which Infiniti has bundled several key safety features, such as lane-departure and forward-collision warning systems, blind-spot monitoring system, adaptive and auto-leveling headlights, and intelligent cruise control.

Finally, for those who frequently have rear-seat passengers to comfort and entertain, an available Theater package answers the call with two 7-in. screens, wireless headphones, and heated power-adjustable second-row seats.

Under the Hood
All 2014 QX80s roll off the assembly line equipped with a direct-injection, 5.6-liter V-8 engine that produces 400 horsepower and 413 lb.-ft. of torque, as well as a 7-speed automatic transmission featuring the company's downshift rev-match technology. The powertrain is complemented by a standard auto-leveling rear suspension and a Class IV hitch that allows the truck to tow up to 8,500 lbs.

Fuel Economy
Interestingly, the RWD and 4WD versions of the 2014 QX80 deliver the same fuel economy: 14 mpg in the city, 20 mpg on the highway, and 16 mpg combined, according to the EPA. Infiniti recommends drivers use premium-grade gasoline.

Safety and Ratings
As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 Infiniti QX80.

In terms of equipment, the large SUV is designed to protect passengers with 6 standard air bags, 4-wheel anti-lock vented disc brakes, and the exterior camera system. These items can be supplemented by the Technology package and its myriad safety features.
