Overview

What's New for 2014:
  • Renamed--formerly known as the Infiniti FX
  • Limited Edition no longer available

Introduction
The 2014 Infiniti QX70 is a 5-passenger luxury crossover model that had previously been labeled the FX. Rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) versions are available, and buyers have their choice of a V-6 or V-8 engine. Competitors include the Acura MDX, Audi Q7, BMW X5, Cadillac SRX, Lexus RX 350, Lincoln MKX, Mercedes-Benz ML-Class, Porsche Cayenne, and the Volvo XC90.

Models and Features
Dubbed 3.7, the QX70's base RWD model earns its luxury-brand stripes with standard amenities including 18-in. alloy wheels, automatic HID headlights, heated power-folding outside mirrors, power tilt/slide moonroof, power-operated liftgate, push-button start, and leather upholstery. In addition, the QX70 offers Bluetooth connectivity, power front seats with 8-way adjustment, and an 11-speaker premium audio system with satellite radio reception and iPod compatibility.

For the upper-level 5.0 trim level, Infiniti swaps out the 3.7's V-6 engine with a V-8, and dials things up even further with upgraded brakes, 21-in. alloy wheels, quilted leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats with memory for the driver, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, aluminum foot pedals, and an 8-in. touch-screen navigation system. That last item is part of the QX70 5.0's standard Premium package, which also includes front and rear park-assist sensors, 360-degree exterior camera system, and Bluetooth streaming audio.

Options and Packages
The Premium package that's standard on the QX70 5.0 is optional on the 3.7 model, as is a Deluxe Touring package consisting of the quilted leather, heated and cooled front seats, and aluminum pedals. A Technology package, offered for both variants, boasts intelligent cruise control, lane-departure and forward-collision warning systems, adaptive and auto-leveling headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and more. Reserved exclusively for the 5.0 is a Sport Technology package featuring upgraded suspension, front sport bucket seats, Infiniti's rear active steer system, and slight changes to the exterior.

Under the Hood
As noted, one of the main differentiators between the QX70 3.7 and 5.0 lies under the hood. The former is equipped with a 3.7-liter V-6 engine that delivers 325 horsepower and 267 lb.-ft. of torque to either the rear or all four wheels via a 7-speed automatic transmission utilizing the company's downshift rev-matching technology. For the QX70 5.0, engineers have employed a 5.0-liter V-8 that generates 390 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque. The 5.0 is only available as an AWD model.

Fuel Economy
Drivers who favor fuel economy above all else should focus their attention on something other than the 2014 Infiniti QX70 5.0. With standard AWD and nearly 400 horsepower, this model offers EPA estimates of only 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. By contrast, the RWD QX70 3.7 is expected to average 17 and 24 mpg, respectively. Pairing AWD with the V-6 cuts the city rating by 1 mpg and reduces highway fuel economy by 2 mpg.

Safety and Ratings
In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Infiniti QX70 received a rating of \"Good\"--the Institute's highest--for moderate front overlap crash protection. As this overview is written, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 Infiniti QX70.

Among the crossover's standard safety features are a rearview camera, 6 air bags, and 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution.
