What's New for 2014:
  • Renamed--formerly known as the Infiniti JX
  • Available hybrid powertrain
  • Standard auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Revised option packages

The 2014 Infiniti QX60 is a 7-passenger, 3-row crossover based on the Nissan Pathfinder. Front-wheel-drive (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) versions are available, as are traditional gasoline-powered and new-for-2014 hybrid powertrains. Competitors include the Acura MDX, Audi Q7, BMW X5, Buick Enclave, Lincoln MKT, and the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class.

Models and Features
Infiniti essentially offers the 2014 QX60 in one trim level with the option of either FWD or AWD capability and a V-6 engine or hybrid powertrain. As a result, there is a single list of standard features that includes 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic HID headlights, fog lights, heated power-folding outside mirrors, power tilt/slide moonroof, and a power-operated liftgate. Those amenities are complemented by heated power front seats, leather upholstery, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with integrated audio controls, 6-speaker satellite radio-ready sound system with a USB port, push-button start, tri-zone climate control, 7-inch display screen, and Bluetooth connectivity. Hybrid models add a gauge that details power output and the battery's state of charge.

Options and Packages
Buyers who select the QX60 have the choice of Premium and Premium Plus packages; for hybrid models, content from both is bundled into a single Hybrid Premium package. Among the upgrades are a 13-speaker premium sound system, memory settings for the driver, heated steering wheel, remote start, 8-inch touch-screen navigation system with voice recognition, front and rear park-assist sensors, and a 360-degree exterior camera system. Infiniti has also added Bluetooth streaming audio and a reverse tilt-down feature for the outside mirrors.

The list of options doesn't stop there. A Theater package, or what most folks might simply refer to as a rear-seat entertainment system, boasts dual 7-inch screens, wireless headphones, and a 120-volt household-type power outlet, while a Driver Assistance package addresses safety with intelligent cruise control, forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring system, and more. The QX60 can be further upgraded with a Technology package offering additional safety features or a Deluxe Touring package comprised of a 15-speaker surround-sound system, 20-inch alloy wheels, rear moonroof, cooled front seats, and heated rear seats. These items are all available on the QX60 Hybrid as part of its Deluxe Technology package.

Under the Hood
Like its Nissan Pathfinder corporate sibling, the 2014 Infiniti QX60 serves as host to a 3.5-liter V-6 engine, though the latter offers a bit more output: 265 horsepower and 248 lb.-ft. of torque. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is standard.

Infiniti's engineers took a markedly different approach for the QX60 Hybrid. In lieu of the V-6, this model uses a supercharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine joined by the CVT, as well as a 15-kW electric motor and a 144-volt Lithium-ion battery pack. All told, the system produces 250 horsepower and 243 lb.-ft. of torque.

Fuel Economy
As one might expect, the FWD hybrid version of the 2014 QX60 proves to be the most fuel efficient, as evidenced by EPA ratings of 26 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Adding AWD will sacrifice 1 mpg around town.

While not as thrifty as its stablemate, the V-6-powered QX60 does promise decent fuel economy for a crossover weighing in at over 2 tons. According to the EPA, FWD models should average 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. Again, AWD comes with a 1-mpg penalty in both city and highway driving.

Safety and Ratings
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Infiniti QX60 received an overall rating of 5 (out of 5) stars. As this overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 Infiniti QX60.

The aforementioned safety-related options are offered in addition to standard features including 6 air bags and 4-wheel anti-lock vented disc brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution.
