What Changed for 2009:
  • One new exterior color-Deep Garnet
  • Standard auto speed-sensing door locks
Overview
The largest offering in the Infiniti lineup is the QX56. It is a full-size SUV with up to 8-passenger seating accommodations. Launched in 2004, the QX56 shares body-on-frame platforms and engines with the Nissan Titan pickup and Nissan Armada SUV. It is manufactured in Nissan's Canton, MS, plant in the United States, and is the only Infiniti model made domestically.

For 2008, Infiniti significantly redesigned the QX56. The interior was enhanced and updated with additional features and technology, and the exterior was upgraded with new front and rear fascias, new wheels and a new roof rack. For 2009, the Infiniti QX56 was left largely untouched with the exception of one new color (Deep Garnet), and standard auto-sensing door locks.

All 2009 Infiniti QX56 models are offered with a 4-year/60,000-mile basic coverage warranty and 6-year/70,000-mile powertrain coverage. Infiniti Roadside Assistance is standard during the first four years of ownership.

Model Lineup
Infiniti offers two QX56 models for 2009: QX56 2WD and QX56 All-Mode 4WD. Both feature a 320-hp, 8-cylinder powerplant and a high level of standard features and conveniences. The difference between the two models is found in the drivetrain; The QX56 4WD is equipped with permanent \"All-Mode\" 4-wheel drive (4WD), additional underbody skid plates, and a standard Towing package, while the 2WD is rear-wheel driven with the Tow package optional.

As the flagship of the Infiniti SUV lineup, the QX56 offers nearly all Infiniti options as standard features. The amenities include standard leather upholstery; 10-way power heated driver and 8-way heated passenger seating; heated second-row seating; 3-zone automatic temperature control with air conditioning; and a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system with 9.3-gigabyte Music Box hard drive. Additional standard features include a Bluetooth hands-free phone system, power-operated rear liftgate, and power-adjustable foot pedals with memory. New for 2009, all Infiniti QX56 models now feature auto-sensing door locks. Options are limited to the Tow package (standard on the 4WD model), Infiniti Mobile Entertainment System, second-row split bench seat, and Intelligent Cruise Control. The standard wheels are chrome-plated, 20-inch aluminum alloy.

Powertrain
The sole powerplant offered in the 2009 Infiniti QX56 is a 5.6-liter, all-aluminum, DOHC 8-cylinder engine. Running on regular unleaded fuel, it is rated at 320 hp and 393 lb.-ft. of torque. Consumers are offered a choice of 2WD or 4WD. EPA fuel-economy estimates are 12 mpg city/18 mpg highway for the 2WD version, and 12 mpg city/17 mpg highway for the 4WD version.

The QX56 is built on a body-on-frame truck chassis with corrosion-resistant high-strength steel. The suspension is independent double wishbone, front and rear, with stabilizer bars. An auto-leveling rear suspension is standard on all models. When properly equipped, the QX56 has a maximum towing capacity of nearly 9000 pounds. The steering is power-assisted with an engine-speed-sensitive variable-assist boost. Four-wheel disc brakes, with 4-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS), are also standard across the lineup.

Safety
Driver and front passenger in all 2009 QX models benefit from the Infiniti Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) that includes dual-stage front air bags, front-seat-mounted side air bags, and front and rear side curtain air bags with rollover protection (designed to protect all outboard passengers in all three rows). Front seat belts are equipped with pre-tensioners and load limiters. Rear outboard seats, second and third row, are fitted with the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system. Standard active safety systems on the Infiniti QX models include ABS, Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and a direct-reading tire-pressure-monitoring system.

The 2007-09 Infiniti QX56 was crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It received 5-star (the Administration's highest rating) driver and 4-star passenger ratings in the frontal impact test, and 3-star rollover ratings for both 2WD and 4WD models. A side-impact rating was not reported. The Infiniti QX56 has not been crash-tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Technology
The 2009 QX56 4WD model features Infiniti's innovative All-Mode 4WD system. Permanently engaged, the system constantly calculates the precise traction needed and reacts with millisecond response time without any input from the driver, maker says. Derived from Nissan's advanced high-performance ATTESA ET-S AWD found on the Nissan GT-R and Infiniti FX45, All-Mode 4WD is engineered to perform in everyday driving conditions, and in off-road conditions. The system is designed around a wet multi-plate clutch in the center differential. Electronics monitor and distribute torque through the clutch to the front or rear axles. Unlike many other systems with \"stepped\" transfers, the All-Mode 4WD system offers nearly infinitely variable torque settings between the wheels, Infiniti says. The automaker also claims that the system offers optimal traction in all conditions, and is completely automatic in operation. If the driver chooses more manual control of the system, a cockpit switch offers the ability to select one of several preset settings: AUTO, 2WD, 4WD High and 4WD Low.
