Overview

The Hyundai Sonata is a full-size sedan that was first introduced for the 1989 model year as a larger sibling to the Hyundai Excel. Today's Sonata is in its sixth-generation, completely redesigned this year. It competes against the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion, and Chevrolet Malibu.

The Sonata is sold in one sedan body style and only with four-cylinder engines - unlike many of its competitors who offer coupe and wagon configurations with four- or six-cylinder power. There are five trim levels: GLS, SE, SE 2.0T, Limited, and Limited 2.0T. Standard GLS models are fitted with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, cruise control, full power accessories, six-speaker audio package, 16-inch steel wheels, and more. The SE - tuned to be a bit sportier - substitutes 18-inch alloy wheels and performance tires, sport suspension, leather/cloth upholstery, and more. The Limited models are configured with upgrades such as leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, and upgraded audio.

The standard Sonata is fitted with a normally-aspirated 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine rated at 198 horsepower, while the Sonata Turbo receives a turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine rated at 274 horsepower. The Sonata Hybrid features a 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder engine rated at 166 horsepower and mated to an electric motor, rated at 40 horsepower. A lithium polymer battery pack feeds power to the motor helping to generate total system power of 206 horsepower.

A six-speed manual transmission is offered on the base four-cylinder, but not on the turbocharged model. A six-speed automatic is optional on base models, but standard on the Turbo and Hybrid variants. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata between 22 mpg city and 40 mpg highway, depending on powertrain.

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata GLS starts with a base price of about $20,000 and tops out with the Sonata Limited 2.0T, which starts around $27,500.
