Exterior Features
The 2013 Honda CR-Z is a 2-passenger, 3-door hatchback modeled as a successor to the Honda CRX, a fuel-efficient and sporty 2-seater that Honda sold in the 1980s and 1990s. The CR-Z is a hybrid vehicle, and is offered in standard and EX trim levels.

For 2013, the CR-Z is updated with revised front styling with a mesh grille and blue-tint headlight accents, updated rear styling with a new diffuser panel and blue-tint LED taillight accents, new color choices, and a new darker finish for its standard 16-inch aluminum wheels. Power-adjustable side mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators are standard, and for 2013 the driver side mirror offers expanded-view glass to help the driver see other motorists who might be in the Honda's blind spots.

Interior Features
Standard equipment for the 2013 Honda CR-Z includes power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, automatic climate control, sport-bolstered seats, height-adjustable driver seat, trip computer, exterior temperature display, and a reversing camera. The 6-speaker audio system includes a CD player, USB port, auxiliary audio input jack, and Bluetooth hands-free calling and music streaming.

The 2013 Honda CR-Z holds up to 25.1 cubic feet of cargo in its trunk, significantly more than a typical midsize sedan.

Optional Features
The 2013 Honda CR-Z EX adds automatic HID headlights with LED running lights, fog lights, heated side mirrors, aluminum shift knob, aluminum pedals, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The EX trim level is also equipped with a premium audio system, ambient interior lighting, and illuminated visor vanity mirrors.

The CR-Z EX is offered with an optional navigation system that includes a 6.5-inch color touch screen, Pandora Internet radio interface, and SMS text messaging capability. Honda also offers a number of dealer-installed accessories for the 2013 CR-Z, including a set of 17-inch aluminum wheels equipped with 205/45 performance tires.

Under the Hood
The 2013 Honda CR-Z is more powerful and more fuel efficient than before. Equipped with Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) technology, the hybrid car pairs a gasoline 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with a DC brushless electric motor and a new Lithium-ion battery pack to produce 130 horsepower and 140 lb.-ft. of torque.

A 6-speed manual gearbox with hill-start assist is standard for the 2013 Honda CR-Z. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) with paddle shifters is optional, and reduces the CR-Z's torque output to 127 lb.-ft.

Three driving modes are standard, selected by the driver using buttons to the left of the steering wheel. Econ mode modifies the car's throttle response, cruise control and climate control to maximize fuel economy. Sport mode \"enhances engine throttle responsiveness, electric power steering effort, and electric motor power assist,\" according to Honda. In between these two modes, the CR-Z offers a Normal mode.

The CR-Z is equipped with a new-for-2013 Plus Sport System, operated using a button on the steering wheel marked \"S+.\" As long as the CR-Z's battery offers a 50% charge and the car is traveling at more than 19 mph, the Plus Sport System supplies a 5-second boost of extra electric power, which is useful when merging onto a highway or passing slower traffic. The Plus Sport System works in any of the CR-Z's three driving modes.

Fuel Economy
As this overview is written, the EPA had not published official fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Honda CR-Z. According to Honda estimates, the 2-seat hybrid is expected to achieve the following fuel economy:

  • CR-Z with manual transmission: 31/38/34 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • CR-Z with CVT: 36/39/37 mpg

Safety
In addition to 6 standard air bags, traction control, stability control, 4-wheel-disc brakes with brake assist, and a reversing camera, the 2013 Honda CR-Z employs Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) in its forward structure. This vehicle architecture is designed to make the CR-Z more compatible with a wider variety of vehicles, and to offer greater pedestrian injury protection.

In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash tests, the 2013 CR-Z receives an overall rating of 4 stars (out of 5 stars). However, the car's side-impact crash-test rating is 3 stars, and the rating for the front-seat passenger in a frontal-impact crash is 3 stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not assessed the 2013 CR-Z as this overview is written.

Everyone's got a pretty good sense of what the German manufacturers have planned on the diesel front. After all, it's their strong suit and the core of their business in their home market and throughout Europe. But when it comes to Honda, particularly in the U.S., the picture is more complex.
