Introduction
The 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 is a light-duty pickup truck available in base, SLE, SLT, and luxurious Denali trim levels. An All-Terrain package is available for the Sierra 1500 SLE, adding specific equipment for improved off-roading performance, according to GMC. Sierra buyers choose between regular, extended, and crew cab body styles with a variety of cargo box lengths.

Key competitors for the Sierra 1500 include the Ford F-150, Nissan Titan, Ram 1500, and the Toyota Tundra. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is essentially the same truck as the GMC, but with different styling and feature packaging.

Models and Features
Depending on the cab style, the Sierra 1500 is offered in base, SLE, SLT, and Denali trim levels.

Standard equipment for the SLE, when compared with the base model, includes carpeting, leather-wrapped steering wheel, remote keyless entry, upgraded trim inside and out, and a set of aluminum wheels. GMC also includes IntelliLink infotainment technology with OnStar services and a reversing camera, as well as a 4.2-in. driver information display, heated side mirrors, and an EZ Lower-and-Lift tailgate design.

The Sierra SLT adds a V-8 engine, automatic-locking rear differential, heavy-duty battery, transmission oil cooler, trailering equipment, remote engine starting, power-folding side mirrors, LED running lights, fog lights, and larger aluminum wheels. Inside, the SLT features leather seats, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable pedals, and a universal remote control.

The Denali version is loaded with unique styling details, spray-in bedliner, big 20-in. wheels, Magnetic Ride Control suspension, and a more powerful V-8 engine. Cabins are decked out with real aluminum trim, premium leather upholstery, 12-way power-adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, heated steering wheel, and a premium audio system.

Under the Hood
One of three different engines can be installed in a 2015 Sierra 1500, each featuring direct fuel injection, variable valve timing, and Active Fuel Management technology that operates the engine on fewer cylinders in order to conserve gas.

The 4.3-liter V-6 engine generates 285 horsepower and 305 lb.-ft. of torque. Step up to the 5.3-liter V-8 for 355 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque. Both engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and offered with rear-wheel (2WD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD).

To access the Sierra's maximum towing capacity, get the 6.2-liter V-8, which comes standard on the Denali. It makes 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque; GMC says it is the most powerful engine available in a light-duty pickup truck. For 2015, a new 8-speed automatic transmission is included with this engine.

A standard free scheduled maintenance program covers the 2015 Sierra's powertrain for the first 2 years or 24,000 miles of ownership.

Fuel Economy
As might be expected, the Sierra's 4.3-liter V-6 engine is the most fuel-efficient choice, rated to get from a low of 17 mpg in the city to a high of 24 mpg on the highway, depending on whether or not the truck is equipped with 4WD.

The 5.3-liter V-8 isn't far behind, returning 16 mpg in the city with 4WD and 23 mpg on the highway with 2WD, according to the EPA. The thirstiest engine is the 6.2-liter V-8, which is rated to get 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway regardless of drivetrain.

Safety and Technology
Nearly all 2015 Sierras include OnStar Directions and Connections service for the first 6 months of ownership, and among the many features is Automatic Crash Response, which automatically summons rescuers to the scene of an accident following an air bag deployment. New for the 2015 model year is OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity, which GMC includes for the first 3 months of ownership, or for the first 3GB of data usage, whichever occurs first.

IntelliLink Bluetooth connectivity is also included for most Sierras, along with USB ports and access to Pandora Internet radio via a paired smartphone. Select SLE, SLT, or Denali trim and the Sierra's IntelliLink system includes an 8-in. color touch screen with natural-language voice control. This version of the technology also includes text-messaging alerts and Siri Eyes Free compatibility, as well as a long list of other upgrades. A navigation system is available as an option.

In terms of safety, the Sierra 1500 is available with a reversing camera and front and rear park-assist sensors. GMC also offers a lane-departure warning system and a forward-collision warning system for the 2015 Sierra, but not a blind-spot warning system. A Safety Alert Seat design vibrates to let the driver know when the lane-departure and forward-collision systems have detected a threat.
